Kerry Addresses Remark on Cheney Daughter

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry said Friday that his reference to Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter being a lesbian was meant as a "constructive comment."

Kerry defended himself from objections raised by Cheney and his wife, Lynne, that he would discuss their daughter's sexuality.

"It was meant constructively in terms of their love and affection for a person who is who she is," Kerry said in an interview taped for broadcast Friday night on CNN's "Paula Zahn Now." "And it was entirely as an example of how people come together around these choices, entirely constructively and respectfully."

Kerry raised Mary Cheney's sexuality during the final presidential debate Wednesday night. While President Bush said he didn't know if sexuality is a choice, Kerry used Mary Cheney as an example to suggest that homosexuality is formed at birth.

By a 2-1 margin, likely voters found Kerry's comment inappropriate, according to an ABC News poll out Friday. Bush also thought it was inappropriate, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

15. No he didn't. They only told him what to think and say about it.
He would have said something at the debate if he sincerely believed this himself.
Spread this meme: Bush missed his chance to call out Kerry on it at the debate.

2. Cheney should THANK Kerry...
What's the alternative?

"Mary Cheney is an example of how lousy parenting by psychotic criminals who care more about money than their kids will force a daughter to turn gay just to get their parents' attention."

Well, a little overstated, but the question was basically "is homosexuality a choice, or what?"

20. Agreed
We can't the vomit that is going to be spewed over the next few weeks deter us.

Ugly politics leads to cynicism leads to suppressed voter turnout leads to politicians being unaccountable.

We must make sure Bush is rejected by the American electorate. Which means we'll have to put on our hip waders and vote.

26. Unfortunately...
...it seems to be working. A couple of days ago, I doubted that Americans could be so gullible as to let this become this year's equivalent of the Wellstone memorial fiasco. Now, I'm not so sure. I notice that Zogby, which had shown the race even prior to the last debate, has shown Bush's lead growing every day since then (now up to 48%-44%). Nothing has happened in the political world that could have swung the electorate Bush's way except this.

:-(

If it were to have an effect, it would be in the other direction.

8. "By a 2-1 margin likely voters" made their decision based on what...
...they were told of the story by the media. Think about it.

By the way...was this an online poll or one done by phone? And what was the political mix of the respondents? "Likely voters" sounds like more Republicans than Democrats were given the poll.

10. Troops dead & innocents killed in the thousands for bush's lies
the economy is upsidedown and America is scorned where we used to be admired - and the big tragedy is that Kerry said Cheney's daughter is a lesbian - something which Cheney and his daughter have both declared?

The media in this country is on life-support.

12. I may get flamed, but, I would have preferred John Kerry referred to
Victor Ashe (our ambassador to Poland) when this question was posed.

What would Junior's long-time friend Victor (aka Queen Victoria) have to say? :eyes:

And, Junior knows the full story, too! Did Victor choose to be gay? Or, was he born this way?

BTW, Junior lied when he said, "I don't know" (if being gay is a choice.) yeah. Right!

24. Kerry was sending a message to GW

that he knew about Queen Victoria.

That is probably why Puppet Boy's face was "frozen" - that description was by Karen Hughes.

Puppet Boy knew,IMO, where Kerry was going with the "there are some wives that ..." statement following his remarks about Sweet Mary.

Seems like Queen Victoria would come back from Poland to campaign for his 'ole partner GW.

No Victor in sight yet?

32. Brilliant. And that is the spin
...that Kerry's camp needs to put on this.

Don't be defensive. Tell the truth. Kerry and Edwards praised Mary and the Cheney's for loving their daughter for who she is; Keyes belittled and insulted her. Which is worse, and which is the most telling?

Push that line over and over and over.

29. Classic cognitive dissonance on the part of most Bush/Cheney supporters
1 - They want to vote for Bush/Cheney because they think Bush/Cheney are against homosexuality, which only comes out in bad families.
2 - But Kerry points out that Cheney's daughter is homosexual, which means that Cheney's is a bad family, and by extension Bush/Cheney.
3 - So, they get angry at Kerry for pointing out a fact which puts their beliefs (about homosexuality only arising in bad families) and the intended actions (voting for Bush/Cheney) in conflict.

The irrational lashing out a Kerry is an attempt to resolve their cognitive dissonance by transferring the dissonance to another source, the one that pointed out the conflict. Their world would be fine if these inconvenient facts were never pointed out.

For the Kerry supporters that are offended, I think it is just a misplaced concern about the word lesbian. It may have too many overtly sexual connotations in our culture for some people to be comfortable with. The word gay seems less provocative these days.

34. I am sick and fucking tired of this nation
We now have a Presidential candidate retracted an absolutely NOTHING statement about someone. We are not discussing the issues of poverty, education, health care, a raped environment, job outsourcing, uninsured, elderly walking the plank.

No, what we are talking about is THIS “Lesbian Situation.” This is what American politics is.

I am beyond disgusted that such a nothing issue and a nothing comment would be promoted by the propagandists (media) as real news while the President of this nation LYING ABOUT Osama Bin Laden isn’t even an issue.

"Kerry defended himself" that's not a retraction.

You can't retract a fact

Instead, I say Kerry and Edwards show up at their next appearance wearing buttons that say "I like Dykes". Heck, I'll even lend them mine.

39. Q: Why do polls go 2-1 against Kerry on this? A: American puritanism.
When you attempt to bring reason to the great morass of fear and loathing over sexuality felt by a people who are obsessed by religious myths, this is your reward.

Poor Kerry--he has a 21st century mind, but that's an uncommon thing among the people he seeks to lead.
