(Tom) DeLay won't debate opponent
DeLay won't debate opponent

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on Friday said that he would not debate Democratic challenger Richard Morrison before the Nov. 2 election.

Morrison and DeLay, both of Sugar Land, are squaring off in the newly redrawn District 22. The district includes a swath of western Galveston County, including portions of Friendswood, La Marque, Santa Fe and Dickinson.

The new boundaries are the result of a bitter redistricting battle engineered by DeLay that promises to bolster the margin by which the Republican Party controls the House of Representatives.

As a challenger with no experience in electoral politics, Morrison, an environmental lawyer, is trying to raise his profile.

1. With the kind of heat DeLay is under
this is hardly surprising.

Coward.

The guy has everything going for him. A redrawn district that benefits him and tons of corrupt money and he still won't debate a political rookie?

Coward. There is no other way to put it.

2. The redrawn district may not be benefiting Delay
KHOU-TV (CBS in Houston) ran a segment this week showing a number of Sugarland yards with Bush/Cheney & Morrison (DeLay's Democratic opponent) signs. They also stated that 30% of the voters had been added due to redistricting and were not happy about it.

A quick search reveals a blog entry from July with encouraging words: DeLay is running 11 points behind Bush/Cheney (which means Bush is garnering 60 percent in the district). DeLay also runs poorly in Galveston County, which has just been added to the district. The theory is that the county, which was cut in half by DeLay's redistricting, is unhappy with the maneouver -- a theme echoed by every Texas Democrat I have talked to the last week.

5. Backlash. That's great.
Morrison is such a long shot. How great would a victory be there?

The Bush-DeLay-Indian Casinos Campaign Money Laundering Operation
(Wampum ‘til they’re dead)

Congressman Tom DeLay , a.k.a. “The Hammer”, has been at the center of two investigations recently by the House Ethics Committee. In each case, and within the span of approximately one week, a letter of reprimand was sent to Mr. DeLay. These actions resulted from unanimous decisions by the 10 member committee, which is made up of equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats. In addition, three close associates of DeLay were recently indicted in Texas for activities related to improper use of corporate funds in state elections and in laundering corporate money for use by Republican candidates for the Texas House of Representatives. To top it off, two of Mr. DeLay’s closest personal and political associates, Jack Abramoff and Mike Scanlon, are at the center of a federal investigation into the possible improper acquisition of some $66 million from several Indian tribes that operate gambling casinos. This investigation was undertaken at the behest of Senator John McCain.

The purpose of this paper is to connect the above dots, revealing a pattern of associations and payments that begins with Congressman Tom DeLay and ends up on the very doorstep of President Bush’s re-election campaign.

6. Maybe they'll start thinking Delay is more trouble than he's worth
He might have been a big deal before there was so much negative baggage attached, but he has gone wild in the last year or two, and done a lot of things to actually embarrass his constituency.

Maybe they're getting fed up with this.
Mixed messages from Ft. Bend County voters

10:34 AM CDT on Thursday, October 14, 2004

By Nancy Holland / 11 News

KHOU

In some yards, signs supporting DeLay's Democratic opponent sit side by side Bush signs.
In the neighborhood of the 22nd District, sometimes what is side-by-side can seem to be a political contradiction.

In Ft. Bend County, there are signs of unprecedented political interest.

At Republican headquarters, the big demand is for Bush-Cheney signs. This is longtime Tom DeLay turf and by their count, 600 DeLay signs have headed out.

Political analysts continue to give DeLay an edge in the race. His campaign staff says DeLay himself will be in the district this weekend to campaign.

He may come across a scattering of other political signs of the times such as Bush-Cheney signs coexisting with Richard Morrison signs. Democrat Morrison has worked what is often considered the heartland of Republican voters, and some Bush voters say they will cross over.
(snip)

"It's a fresh start and I think he can add a lot of new blood. He believes in bi-partisan working together. It's kind of an answer as to why there's two different representations in the signs," says voter Tom Suter.
(snip)

For those with such signs, what seems like a contradiction is the beauty of the American system at work.

Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 05:21 AM by TaleWgnDg
pages of the Boston Globe newspaper! I kid you not.

Didn't all that toxic bug spray liquify his brain? HHhhhhmmm? It sure appears as if it injured his brain's impulse control mechanism, or at the very least, diminished any normal barrier to his inhibitions. Heh.

Loud, coarse, crass, uninhibited AND POWERFUL, isn't very friendly.

When are you guys in Texas going to give Tom the boot?

10. DeLay refused to debate on the advice of his attorneys.
DeLay's lawyers know that the subject of DeLay's numerous felonies will come up and DeLay would have to plead the fifth. The lawyers also are concerned that DeLay would commit additional felonies during the debate since he apparently does nothing without committing at least one crime.

Morrison should find a way to raise the question of whether DeLay's refusal to debate was on the advice of his criminal attorneys.

12. I think he means all the debate slots are filled up by minorities
and he just isn't able to get a slot. It isn't that he doesn't want to debate. He would be the bravest debater ever if only those dang minorities would give him the opportunity.

13. They're just thinking of themselves, at poor Tom Delay's expense.
His opponent is damned lucky! If he had half a chance, he'd be all over him like a cheap suit.

18. He just really is the ultimate fuck you of a person
Meaner'n a snake, self-righteous, underhanded, hypocritical, tireless, a relentless bully, and someone who considers himself to be god's gift to the inferiors. Taking him down is a sacred cause in the defense of what little's left of the decency of the American Character.

It would be the richest form of irony if his gerrymandering greed causes him to lose. Regardless, this little Robespierre's made so many enemies, that the continuing ethics violations may make him such a liability that his own party Baxterizes him. My fingers are crossed; he may wind up being this era's Joe McCarthy.
