Robinson, Geldof, Bono call on Ahern over aid

The former president, Mary Robinson, and rock singers Bono and Bob Geldof have written a joint letter to the Taoiseach calling on him to ensure that Ireland meets its commitment to the world's poor.

The open letter is in response to recent reports that Ireland may not reach its target of spending 0.7% of the country's income or GNP on world aid by 2007.

They commended Ireland for its previous commitment to world aid but warned that failing to meet our target could provide an easy excuse for other countries to do the same.



Five other countries have given a date to reach the UN spending target of 0.5% on world aid since Ireland's pledge at the Millennium Summit in New York in September 2000
