G-8 discuss Iran nuclear tensions
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 10:31 AM by seemslikeadream
WASHINGTON: Top officials from the Group of Eight powers met here to discuss ways of making Iran give up its alleged nuclear weapons programme.

The meeting is to discuss measures proposed by Britain, France and Germany,
which have led a European initiative to engage Iran over its nuclear activities.

No official details have been given on what the European nations have
proposed to persuade Iran to halt uranium enrichment, a key step toward the making of a nuclear bomb.

U.S. and G-8 to discuss incetives for Iran
All G-8 countries, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada and Russia, will have senior officials at the State Department session, Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Wednesday.

They are expected to discuss a package of possible incentives for Iran in an attempt to push the Islamic state to halt all its nuclear activities.

However, Boucher said, "we are going to discuss with them further what to do in the Security Council if there's agreement in November to refer it there."

Due to shorts of votes, the U.S. has been foiled in trying to push the council to impose sanctions against Iran. The option the U.S. is considering now is to start taking moves against Iran if it does not suspend all its nuclear activities before the UN atomic watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, meets in Vienna next month.

Working with other countries on the nuclear issue is the sort of multilateral diplomacy that Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry accused the Bush administration of lacking.

1. Future President Kerry should take advantage of this meeting...
to begin talking to the G-8 leaders behind the scenes. Shhhhh, don't tell the incumbent who's out joking it up with his pre-programmed laugh track.
