Bush stumbles on military draft
US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) surprised his listeners at a campaign rally by seeming to oppose, then favor, then oppose replacing the all-volunteer US military with a draft. Aides had alerted reporters to expect "new language" in Bush's routine rejection of Democratic rival John Kerry (news - web sites)'s warnings that the Iraq (news - web sites) war has so strained the US armed forces that compulsory military service may be around the corner.

"Our all-volunteer army will remain an all-volunteer army," Bush began, to cheers from supporters here in Florida, the richest prize among the dozen or so states up for grabs in the November 2 election.

"My opponent seems to be willing to say almost anything he thinks will benefit him politically," he said. "After standing on the stage, after the debates, I made it very plain we will not have an all-volunteer army." "And yet this week..." he continued, before suddenly realizing the gaffe and shouting: "We will have an all-volunteer army."

"Let me restate that: We will not have a draft. No matter what my opponent tries to tell people and scare them, we will have an all-volunteer army," promised the president, who is known for frequent verbal stumbles. "The only person talking about a draft is my opponent. The only politicians that supported a draft are democrats, and the best way to avoid a draft is to vote for me," he said.

No, John Kerry has far too much integrity to "pounce" on something like this.

23. I say pounce on it!
The way they take Kerry's statements and votes out of context and use them, they deserve the same treatment.

Besides that, the sheer stupidity of the little Bush boy should be a very, very valid reason to send him back to TX (or wherever else he might want to go after he's out of office). To paraphrase Carville in 2000, "it's the stupidity (of Bush), stupid"!

58. The chimp always 'mis-speaks'
now he is trying to use his butchery of the language to his benefit. The other day he said "Laura speaks better than I do, I mangle the language." Aw, isn't that folksie. I don't want a president who mangles the language. I want a president who can communicate to others above a third grade level. I want a president who's hopefully smarter than I am.

63. Wow, someone who has such a clear message to deliver
and fails to deliver?

Yes, American people this is our President. The one who confuses South Korea with North Korea, the one who connected links of 9/11 to Saddam Hussein when none can be found, the one who has all but forgotten Osama bin Laden, the one who paraded Mission Accomplished, yet thousands more were to die....

This mixed-message from our President should be pounced on over and over again.

Sink their ship.

It doesn't matter what Bush promises. He goes back on most of them or rewrites them and never looks back. A promise not to bring back the draft means nothing from this administration.

8. The flop flips and flops all the time now!
The furious flop flipper has flopped again with a flip of the lip.

The only draft I feel right now is the waft of hot air that emerges from the vacuous cavern of the Emperor's mind.

I know he has trouble with effective and clear statements, but:
"The only person talking about a draft is my opponent."

I just had to point that one out. Mr. pResident, you are talking about the Draft right now. Your spin on it is different though.

To me, any support of PNAC's outline, (originally the Wolfowitz Doctrine) will necessitate a draft. The Bush Doctrine essentially follows that line. Cheney and Rummy just have to go, or we are on a path of World Domination.

I don't see four more years of the same in a second Bush term, as some say. I see four more years of the same with a multiplication factor that can range from x2 to powers of ten.

Just stretch the troops out to their outer limits in an misbegotten side show war in Iraq, and pretend that it's all going to be OK. All will be paid for, we have as many troop as necessary to maintain peace and prosperity in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's all good? Is that what he's trying to say? The man is absolutely delusional.

then he'll look all solemn as he address the nation that the unforeseen need for this upcoming offense strike has tipped the balance and must instate the draft.

Or....as the economy continues to go in the crapper and jobs continue to decline in both numbers and value then the military may be a more attractive option for many as they struggle to feed their families.

Or...both...

I get the feeling he was going to say "And yet this week...my opponent still says the same thing" (or something similar)

Does anyone here even know what is entailed in getting the draft started? I'd heard that a super-majority is needed. And even with a simple majority - it could be filibustered quite easily (look at the confirmation hearings).

And Kerry himself has said he would keep the option open.

my two cents

56. Rules? * doan need no stenkin rules.
George W. Bush has, according to the big blue dress herself, when faced with losing by the rules, simply changed them. Being the oldest of cousins, he would change the game when the youger ones were winning. That tactic is imbedded in his psyche.

If Congress won't give him his "National Service", he will simply Executive Order it. He circumvented the legislation that Congress passed after the Repug's Watergate debacle to release Presidential papers after 12 years. Reagan's presidency was about to be laid bare to the glare of public scrutiny, so what does * do? He lifts his pen and reverses the law - and Ronnie's transgressions are hidden for at least an additional 4 years, plenty of time to name a few thousand more things after him.

Let's face it --- That man has initaited his own dialect of English. So far from the main, that some conservatives have ceased calling for an amendment to the US Constitution calling for English as the Official American Language.

It wouldn't do to insult the President of the United States and insist he learn English - a recognizable version.

The history of George W. Bush, 43rd President of the US, will have an entire anthropological subcategory consisting of theories of what language he thought he was speaking, and the roots of the dialect he employed.

70. Army is non-volunteer NOW!
Repeated call ups of reservists & guard members + stop loss prevention of people mustering out when their enlistment is over = a bunch of non-volunteers already serving! THAT is the point to pound home.

Follow that up with the fact that Selective Service Boards already in the making and the make the lying murder choke down some big servings of crow along with his own damned words.

The neocon war juggernaut has pretty well assured at least 2 generations of people with some legitimate axes to grind with the US. That sure as hell has not made us or the rest of the world any safer. Only thing rendered secure by the Yee Haw Shock & Awe foreign policy is the profits of corporations making and selling (to all sides of conflict) the implements of war. The vampires engaging in war profiteering by covering land in the blood of innocents are very safe now.

Question for the neocon criminals in charge: It is pretty well accepted that the USSR fell because too much of the national resource went into arms production/maintenance. So, are you money grabbing weasels slow learners or is it actually your aim to send the US down the same spillway to disaster as your ol arch enemy?

He'll find a way to provide support for a draft if he has to. I don't trust this administration at all.
