The scene stretched from Joppa Road to New Forge Road along I-95. Emergency crews from Baltimore, Harford and Cecil counties responded to the accidents.

WBAL-TV 11 news helicopter pilot Capt. Roy Taylor reported he saw at least 5 different accident scenes around the New Forge Road area of I-95. He said multiple tractor-trailers were blocking the interstate in both directions.

Taylor reported that it appeared one tractor-trailer rolled over a car. He also reported that a tractor-trailer jack-knifed into the median along with several other vehicles.

Taylor counted at least 50 vehicles involved in the numerous accidents. He said there are also minor accident scenes along I-95 near the Route 543/Riverside Parkway exit in Harford County.

Medical helicopters from the Maryland State Police as well as the U.S. Park Police in Washington, D.C., are transporting victims to area hospitals. There are reports of at least 25 people injured.

Curtis Tolliver -- a witness who was driving on I-95 -- told 11 News that shortly after 4:15 p.m. a storm blew through the White Marsh area with heavy rain and hail about the size of quarters for about 20 minutes. He said he saw vehicles collide with one another and notified police right away

Not of Amtrak, but of the kind of sleek passenger rail service I loved when I was growing up. Used to travel weekly back and forth from Union Terminal in Cincy to the wonderful and historical station (now demolished) in my small home town.

But you see, trains don't make money for the auto companies, for big oil, for developers of suburban, gated Amerikka, for highway contractors parrying favor with politicians, et al. What has happened to rail service in this country is a SCAM and a SHAME, yet no one seems to care.

Want energy independence? More well paying jobs? Reduced pollution and congestion? The development of an extensive, new rail passenger service in this country could provide all of these. There are just too many palms being greased for that to ever happen -- and you won't find any politician from either side of the aisle willing to support it for those very reasons.

30 or 40 years ago, compared to today. Americans have just been so scared of "Socialism" that the idea of a national transportation system has been too hard to sell.

Just wondering -- I haven't heard anything.

In addition to the many reasons we've all cited for the lack of a sane, efficient rail system in this country, I do think America has become "unionphobic". Railway workers are UNION workers -- that means good pay, good benefits and decent retirement programs. All of that bespeaks cutting into shareholders' profits. That's unfortunately what America has become: a nation so obsessed with an accumulation of obscene wealth for the few that the security of all its citizens, its hard-working "masses", is portrayed as an encroachment of socialism. When and how was the American public so throughly (and successfully) indoctrinated?

6. Some of us care very much

I've said for years that to re-energize our economy, wean ourselves from foreign oil, ease cogestion, reduce global warming, etc. we must invest in high speed (mag-lev, if I had my way) and light rail. Think of how many Americans could be put to work!

But for all the reasons you stated above, it won't happen. We even had it placed on our state ballots (FL) in 2000, and the state overwhelmingly voted to build a rail system, but Jeb put a halt to that by bankrupting the state through tax cuts for the wealthy. :eyes:

9. Another Train fan. As a young girl I would travel via the rails all the

time with my shoe-box lunch (chicken leg, boiled egg, carrot strips, and fruit). I remember my first time in the dining car (this was after the civil rights bill passed, prior to that train travel was segregated in the south.). I can't think of a better dining experience. It was remarkable! Eating my dinner while traveling on a train! It was elegant and beautiful!

The very train station that I traveled from has also been torn down.

At some point I read about a "super" train. I wish train travel would make a comeback because I really enjoyed it.

I would assume ytou are also in favor of doing away with air passenger service as well, since it also "dictates where we are allowed to go and when we can go there".

A well designed national train system can provide basic commuting service around major metropolitan areas as well as quick, clean, and affordable transportation between cities. It's a no-brainer, or at least it was back when we had the federal funds to build the basic infrastructure.

14. Not so horrific that Google Search shows the story hasn't been "updated"

since the accident happened. The stories are from Canadian Newspaper and Guardian with on report by AP which hasn't been updated since 5:32 p.m.

I did a Google and Yahoo search on this. Google had 115 posts with only three stories that were all the same story worded a little differently from the time the accident happend. Even went to the Baltimore TV Station WBAL and they only had a link from AP with NO updates.

We seem to know more about Laci Petersen and Kobe Bryant than we do about a "freak hail storm" on I-95 with "90" cars involved.
