Kerry gets blame for Haiti unrest
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 09:52 PM by cal04
what a bunch of bunk, Bush screws up, and guess who gets blamed
Mr. Bush he was ELECTED, unlike you!(John Kerry called that "short-sighted" and said he would have sent troops to protect Mr Aristide, who was an elected leader. )

Now General Heleno, says those comments have offered hope to Aristide's supporters that should Mr Kerry win the US election in November the former Haitian president might be restored to power.
I hope Kerry comments on this!

The commander of the UN peacekeepers in Haiti has linked a recent upsurge in violence there to comments made by the US presidential candidate, John Kerry.

Earlier this year Mr Kerry said that as president he would have sent American troops to protect Jean-Bertrand Aristide who was ousted from power in February.

The Brazilian UN general, Augusto Heleno, said Mr Kerry's comments had offered "hope" to Aristide supporters. Much of the recent unrest has centred on areas loyal to Mr Aristide.

More than 50 people have died over the past fortnight.

3. Off With His Head
This is a political statement.
The UN troops are there as police, not politicians. I think that this requires his removal and the UN to take over. He answers to the UN. Do the other members of the UN agree with this?
Time for Annan to exert authority.

5. I guess when you're the originator or enforcer of an illegal coup, and
someone insists on restoring the rightfully and legally ELECTED leader that you toppled, you'd be pissed off, too when called out publicly on it!

Way to go President Kerry!

10. Haiti's a mess
Has been for centuries really. But when a country elects someone, you work with it. You don't marginalize countries, we've seen how well that works with Cuba, N Korea and Iran. It just doesn't. Bush put in someone from Florida who hasn't been to Haiti since the 50's. If Clinton supported it, Bush had to undo it, seems that simple to me.

11. Here are a couple of threads from D.U. during the conflict
Since you haven't heard anything, you'll get a rush of new information a lot of DU'ers read and absorbed back then, among many other threads then and after the coup. It's better late than never, if you want to know about a very widely read, photographed, discussed and televised giant leap backwards in human progress, thanks to our radical right-wing pResident:

7. Oh certainly
With their country washed away in floods, what they're really tuned into is a blurb made in the American press 6 months ago.

On the other hand, if they're hanging on to a little bit of hope in John Kerry, I say we better not let them down.

13. As far as I remember, the only excuse given for deposing Aristide
was that he had lost control of the country. So if it's still a mess, even with outside forces, shouldn't Aristide be allowed back in? As the article says in passing, he's still the elected leader.
