15. Actually Volusia county is not that conservative
Both Volusia and Flagler counties, the area that the N-J covers, voted for Gore in 2000.

10. Sorry abot the link
I was reading my morning paper, the Daytona N-J, and posted the endorsement. I got so absorbed in the two opinion articles, that I forgot to come back and search for the link. Thanks to those who did.

3. Got a link?
With St. Petersburg Times and the Daytona News-Journal endorsing Kerry, we have both ends of the I-4 corridor covered. The Orlando Sentinel, in the middle of the I-4 corridor hasn't committed yet, but they have endorsed a Republican for U.S. Senate (Mel Martinez over Democratic candidate Betty Castor). In my opinion, the odds are that the Orlando Sentinel to go with Bush.

5. The Case for John Kerry --link
http://www.news-journalonline.com/NewsJournalOnline/Opinion/Editorials/03OpOPN01101704.htm

wonderful words, awful graphic

America's prosperity doesn't entirely depend on a great president. America's future does.

John Kerry's distinguished service has prepared him to be the leader this country needs. The world, as much as America, would benefit by his intelligence, integrity, courage and compassion in the Oval Office. It especially needs his perceptive restraint. As a young man Kerry fought valiantly in Vietnam, a record of honor no spin machine can refute. Once home, he fought for better care for disabled veterans and challenged the government's misinformed policies related to that war. "How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?" he asked a Senate committee, a question that stirs the national conscience today as then.

Kerry earned a law degree, prosecuted organized crime lords in Massachusetts and served capably as that state's lieutenant governor. For 20 years, he has served in the U.S. Senate, championing sensible legislation such as the child tax credit that benefits American families while opposing special interests that tried to profit at public expense.

6. The case against George W. Bush
Companion article to the Daytona Beach News-Journal Kerry endorsement

http://www.news-journalonline.com/NewsJournalOnline/Opinion/Editorials/03OpOPN03101704.htm

Four years ago, George W. Bush asked voters to send him to Washington on his promise that he would unite this nation by governing from the center with compassion, integrity and accountability. Fewer than half the Americans who cast ballots in 2000 were persuaded enough to vote for him. He gained the White House by the skin of a 5-to-4 Supreme Court decision. Afterward, many Americans concluded that a president with so tenuous a claim on the Oval Office should be trusted to govern temperately. They gave him a 60 percent approval rating on his promise.

Eight months later, his embarrassing performance -- indulging his party's religious fringe, shilling for big corporate cronies, withdrawing from foreign alliances, cloaking his administration in secrecy -- had so disgusted the majority of Americans that his approval rating was in freefall at 49 percent. Rarely has a presidency plummeted so low so fast so early in its first term. Mention of a second term became a punch line.

Until Sept. 11, 2001. On the day the Twin Towers collapsed, Bush resurrected his presidency on the rubble of fear. It is to that fear that he returns now, implying that voters risk graver danger from terrorists if they deny him a second term.

Fear is the dominant, almost exclusive message of the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign. It has to be. Without fear to fuel the language of war, this administration can't maintain the illusion of legitimacy. Its policies, domestic and foreign, are bankrupt, its promises shards of hubris. Take a look at the broken pieces.

8. That's my local paper!
I have a copy sitting in my driveway right now. Both articles (Pro-Kerry, Anti-Bush) are suitable for framing.

16. Just some facts:
The N-J has a fairly liberal editorial page and endorsements are coveted by the local candidates.

Volusia county Dems are doing a fantastic job. They even showed up at a relative's job site and passed out absentee ballots. I'm not in Volusia, but I see them all over, including the movie theatre where they showed Fahrenheit 9/11, with a booth inside the theatre. Give them a call, they need your help.

Volusia and Flagler county went for Gore in 2000.

12. Florida Today Newspaper (Space Coast area) Endorses Kerry
America needs new leadership, and John Kerry can bring it to the White House

This is what America faces this morning:

U.S. troops are under fire and dying in Iraq -- the worst foreign-policy debacle since Vietnam -- in a war that didn't need to be fought.

More Americans are without health care, nearly 45 million, and in poverty, almost 36 million, than ever in the nation's history.

Working-class families are steadily losing ground as decent-paying jobs disappear, while a record federal budget deficit and historic national debt are drowning the country in red ink that will choke future generations.

That's the tip of the iceberg, and all of it has occurred under President George W. Bush.

Stay the course? Not us, and neither should the nation.

America needs new leadership, and we believe Democrat John Kerry can bring it to the White House, based on three decades of far-reaching public service that make him exceptionally qualified to be President of the United States.
