Wal-Mart owned store spurs protest in Mexico
Facility going up only a mile from ancient pyramid

TEOTIHUACAN, Mexico - Hundreds of Mexican protesters, many of them in Aztec tunics and headdresses, demonstrated Sunday against construction of a discount store owned by Wal-Mart just a mile from the world's third-largest pyramid.

The protesters are outraged over a new Bodega Aurrera store near the 2,000-year-old ruins of Teotihuacán, about 20 miles north of Mexico City.

"This is a sacred place, and we should keep it sacred," said Everardo Lara, a 49-year-old accountant from Mexico City who was among about 200 demonstrators outside the gates of the historical site. About 100 others marched down a nearby highway before joining them.

Bodega Aurrera is owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of Bentonville, Ark. The company began construction in June on a commercial street in the gritty town of San Juan Teotihuacán, and the store is expected to open in December.

1. An analogy:
Imagine a Wal-Mart in St. Peter's Square, or by the Temple Mount, or the Golden Temple, or on the banks of the Ganges.

In a book I have about world religions, consumerism is mentioned as a 'new religion'. This story seems to indicate that the authors of that book may have been correct.
