(Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) arrogantly ignored the advice of his top generals about the need for more equipment to fight the war in Iraq (news - web sites), Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) said on Monday.
At an early rally here, the senator from Massachusetts seized on remarks published in The Washington Post by the former top U.S. commander in Iraq complaining last winter to the Pentagon (news - web sites) that a poor supply situation was threatening the Army's ability to fight.
"The president is always talking tough about what he's going to do to protect America," Kerry said, calling Bush's talk of support for the troops, "nothing more than empty rhetoric."
Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez wrote in a letter on Dec. 4, 2003, to top Army officials that the lack of vital spare parts for tanks, helicopters and other systems was so severe that "I cannot continue to support sustained combat operations with rates this low," the newspaper reported.
