Bush would grudgingly accept Islamic state in Iraq
United States President George W Bush says he would grudgingly accept a fundamentalist Islamic government in Iraq, if the country voted to create one in free elections.

"I would be disappointed but democracy is democracy," Mr Bush said. "If that's what the people choose, that's what the people choose."

Free elections are expected next January in Iraq.

Mr Bush has touted the prospect for democratic governments there and in Afghanistan as evidence that his administration is making progress in the US war on terrorism.

6. At this point they're so desperate they'll say anything
The last thing the Neo-Con agenda called for was a Shiite Islamic state in Iraq.

3. um .
who will be the next dictator? Remember Saddam, though a very cruel and an inhumane monster, was 'secular'.

Woe to the extremes of this planet.

I'm sure whoosh would not-so-grudgingly accept a fundamentalist government in our own nation.

Luckily he won't get that chance!

11. Saddam isn't a fundementalist
he had a secular government where even Christianity was practiced. And there's the rub; what follows Saddam will likely be far more brutal (especially to women), even "Taliban-esque".

7. Not many choices there King Georgie
What did you expect? This is Iraq for chrissakes. Were you holding out for that elusive Baptist-controlled government? I guess in your mind, when the choice is Islamic versus secular, you'll inevitably go for the religious fanatics.

10. Why yes...
Edited on Tue Oct-19-04 01:18 AM by w13rd0
...an Islamic government with a deep resentment of the United States due to years of cohersion of their government and eventual military action, could take root...

oh, wait...

on edit: the people of Iran LOVED the Shah, and I'm sure those in Iraq that rermember Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam, our ally in a war against those damned Islamic fundamentalist Shia in Iran, would never support a Shia Islamic fundamentalist government in iraq that choose to also hate the US for its propping up Saddam and then killing them slowly and quickly over a 15 yr period of time thru sanctions and military action once Saddam made us mad...

Not only will be an Islamic theocracy, but will as its first act demand the departure of U.S. forces....

19. News Flash: Earth to Bush

You reap what youy f'ing sow. You installed a "Christian State" by coup d'etat in the USA, precisely in order to overthrow the secular government in Iraq. They have leared well from you.

Anyway, since 95 percent of Iraqis are Muslim, it IS al Islamic state. What the headline means is "Islamic government."

Stupid, stupid president.
