British Meddling in U.S. Election Provokes Outrage
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20041019/pl_nm/campaign_britain_dc&cid=615&ncid=2043

LONDON (Reuters) - A pro-Kerry letter-writing campaign by Britain's left-leaning Guardian newspaper, targeting undecided U.S. voters, has provoked outrage across the Atlantic.

The newspaper has encouraged its readers to express their opinions on the Nov. 2 presidential election to voters in the key swing state of Ohio -- to the fury of Clark county.

"Hey England, Scotland and Wales, mind your own business. We don't need weenie-spined Limeys meddling in our presidential election," was one of the e-mail reactions to the campaign. snip

But the newspaper, whose cartoons regularly portray President Bush as a semi-literate ape, was unrepentant.

8. Hmmm....
I fail to see how letter writing constitutes 'meddling'... it's not as if The Grauniad is over there paying off the manufacturers of the voting machines... It's simply not rich enough to better what the Repugs have already paid. :)

I'd welcome a letter from some Yank telling me who to vote for in the next UK General Election. Problem is, our election process only takes 6 weeks, and it's doubtful that a Republican could manage complete sentences in that time. :)

10. I was dubious about this
I asked the Guardian for an address to write to (11,000 others did so too) but I hesitated a long time before I posted the letter. I wrote from the heart but with respect and diffidence. I wrote in English and then translated it into American and I explaind who I was and why I cared. I also inserted 'President' before 'Bush' throughout. I hope I have done no more damage than loosing a single vote in Springfield Ohio.

If there is any feedback from recipients in Clark County I would be very glad to hear about it. The reaction so far is merely bile from those who have heard about the project, and hate the idea of lousy ungrateful foreigners with bad dentistry daring to have an opinion. They seem obsessed by our teeth and a lot of them write entirely in capital letters.

14. Who lives in Clark County Ohio?
I've never been there, never even been to Ohio, but I've had many friends from there, most of whose ancestors come from the same places the writers of those letters come from, England, Scotland, and so on, so my hunch is Clark County might have a lot of the same residents.

If anything, you'd think they'd be grateful that their cousins on the other side of the pond were concerned enough about them and their perilous situation to write them letters of support to try to help them.

11. But Putin - the former COMMUNIST KGB HEAD, endorses bunkerboy
literally campaigns for him - and, amazingly, SILENCE from the repukes!

So it's OK to meddle, as long as it's FOR bunkerboy, right repukes?!

Edited on Tue Oct-19-04 08:18 AM by Aidoneus
Hey! No fair! That's OUR game! Wa'ah! Waaaaa'ah!

A few letters is a pretty passive display--at least they're not using bombs & death squads. The responses were absolutely hilarious in that "...and then they voted" sort of ... well now that I put it that way, they weren't "ha-ha" funny so much as an awe-inspiring "oh-fuck-they-also-have-the-guns" instinctual response.

more than 11,000 people requested addresses
I don't doubt it. I think I requested a few hundred myself. You could use any address (say hello to limeywuss@badteeth.com)

They did track, so you need to keep using different addresses to get new names - but they don't have to be real addresses.
