'Crossfire' clash still smolders
http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2004/10/19/crossfire_clash_still_smolders/

How's this for a feud that straddles the line between politics and entertainment? CNN's bow-tied conservative, Tucker Carlson, vs. "The Daily Show" host, Jon Stewart.

Yesterday, Carlson fanned embers still hot from a "Crossfire" confrontation, saying Stewart looked ridiculous in his CNN appearance and was a sellout for backing John F. Kerry.

Stewart, appearing on the debate show Friday, angered Carlson by saying "Crossfire" is "partisan hackery" that does little to advance the cause of democracy.

-snip-

"I thought that he looked ridiculous," Carlson said in an interview yesterday, "and I think the tape makes that clear." Carlson said Stewart had continued lecturing the "Crossfire" crew after the show went off the air. "I wasn't offended as much as I was unimpressed," he said.

-----------------------------------------------------------

God, Tucker Carlson is such a whining bow-tied little baby! :eyes:

10. LOL...Tucker speaks as though he were Stewart's equal
News for you Tucker. 90% of America doesn't even know who you are. Jon Stewart is now an America icon. Don't be so stupid as to think you work at CNN gives you any credibility. When the RW goes down in flames, you'll be managing a car wash back home in Minnesota.

84. Did you see Crossfire today? Did Carlson seem unusually reserved to you?
He did to me. I don't know whether that's because he knows CNN producers who could yank him off the show in an instant have him under their microscope, or whether he's suddenly realized what low opinion millions of Americans have for him and his nonstop sarcasm.

Did you notice that Begala called Tucker a d**k to his face today (though Paul cleverly used innuendo rather than profanity).

20. Point of order:
Edited on Tue Oct-19-04 11:37 AM by mac56
Tucker is not from Minnesota. He's a DC kid. His father ran Voice of America, if I recall.

Arne and Barb Carlson (Minnesota politicos) have a son named Tucker, but it's not the same guy.

Carry on...

Add on edit: His dad ran the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, not VOA.

22. Maybe he is that desperate for fame.
He's tired of being a whiny rich boy sailing through life on Daddy's connections (just like someone else we know) and if his PBS show (through Daddy's connections)and his Readers Digest pieces don't catapult him into the cool crowd, maybe the best he can get is being called a dick by Jon Stewart. Wait, no "maybe". It IS the best he can get.

"Carlson's previous connection to public broadcasting was through his father, Richard, who was CPB president from 1992 to 1997. Richard Carlson is now vice chairman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, an anti-terrorism think tank."

85. DOUBTLESS he is. Jack Kennedy was his uncle, but Tucker knows
he's no Jack Kennedy.

(I learned about his kinship with Kennedy from a recent lengthy guest appearance by Tucker Carlson on Larry King. The conversation where his relationship to the former president is in the transcript of that show--I saw it once).

I tend to think Carlson doesn't really believe most of the right-wing nonsense he repeats--he's just crying out for attention he cannot get in any other way, the poor dummy. He wears right-wing slogans the same way he wears a bow tie. It would be quite easy for him to change his wardrobe at any time.

106. Who would have guessed Jon Stewart would become what the is today?
It's as though the Jon Stewart rise to greatness is being forced upon him, he reluctantly stands up to the task but it is clear he only wanted to do comedy. His reputation for speaking the truth and asking the tough questions are spreading and corporate controlled media heads are scared. Jon Stewart, man of the people, even though all he wanted to do was comedy. a true hero of these times. He may become the Bob Dylan of this age, going down in history as the voice of the American people during trying times. Just as Bob Dylan really only thought of himself as a musician,Jon Stewart thinks of himself as just a comedian, who would have guessed it would grow into this? I love it, love to see someone rise to the task, especially when they did not intend it to happen - a true hero.

21. Made more fun of the show named after "errant gang gunfire"
Said Tucker was not the only dick on the show - called tham all dicks.

Said that he was sorry he was not being funny on the crossfire appearance, but reminded Crossfire that the next day he would return to being funny but they would all still be dicks.

Said he whole thing was extremely uncomfortable..

Made a few funny gestures around the "funny monkey" reference throughout the show.

If the crossfire gang watches it.. well...... it will piss them off to no end :)

LOL

9. Tucker Was Completely Unprepared for That
although he actually kept his head and from a debating point of view his responses were actually fairly clever. I would have completely disintegrated in that situation. Tucker's problem is that he seems to have absolutely no idea of the effects of what he's saying. The whole Republican party seems to have left the reality-based community.

19. -ahem - it isn't the bow tie
that makes carlson moronic and childish its what he says when he opens his mouth. carlson may have the physical dexterity required to tie a bow tie, unfortunately he lacks the maturity and intelligence to wear one successfully. if he wore a neck tie he'd be just as pathetically clueless and laughable as he is wearing a bow tie.
john steward totally out shined both the talking heads on crossfire.

p.s. Harry Truman is one guy who could wear a bow tie successfully.

Tucker Carlson, sitting there day after day, in that ridiculous bow tie and those meaty, moist, pouty boy lips vs. Jon Stewart? Stewart is witty, hip, funny, intelligent, fair, sexy in a self depricating way (and dresses really well!). Geez.. who do you think would win in the court of public opinion?

Carlson an oversized Little Lord Fountleroy or hip, intense, Stewart. Tough call. NOT.

66. Even the audience
in Crossfire seemed completely enamored with Jon Stewart. These are the people who had actually made an effort to come see a taping of the show that he was trashing. It wasn't just that they laughed at his jokes (and his rather vicious insults), they actually applauded his assertion that the media, including Crossfire, is "hurting America."

It reminded me of the (admittedly much more friendly) Larry King interview, in which Jon Stewart absolutely danced circles around him, and by making eye contact with the camera like he does on his own show, made it seem like Larry King wasn't in on Jon's private jokes with the audience. He even made the camera operators laugh more than once!

That's one charismatic guy!

36. Stewart meant well, but executed poorly
Look, no one is a bigger Jon Stewart fan than me, but I thought his appearance on Crossfire was ill conceived and mean spirited. I recognize his argument, that being a human bullhorn for your respective party is counterprodutive and feeds the partisanship in politics, but the WAY he went about it left a bad taste is my mouth. He should have refused the invite if he had no other plans than to insult the hosts of the show. Paul Begala was right when he stated the his show was a "Debate" show and so they debate the issues. My message to Jon is- If your message gets lost in delivery, than no matter how legitimate your message is, it is still lost. And quite frankly, I'm not buying this argument that "The Daily Show" is some innocent comedic material following "Crank Yankers". The Daily Show is deadly serious and has an angenda every bit as legitimate as Hannity and Colmbes, Crossfire, etc. Don't let your head get to big, Jon.

45. calling 'crossfire' a debate
Edited on Tue Oct-19-04 02:28 PM by rozf
is elevating its status - it is a shouting match - nothing more. Jon called it as he and, I might add, many others see it. They ARE hacks; they ARE incredibly impressed w/ themselves; they serve no purpose other than 2 advance their own agendas; what did Jon get wrong? He was a guest? Funny, he was not treated as such. Carlson Xpected Jon 2 entertain him...he said so. Jon WAS the trained monkey and carlson was pissed Jon wasn't performing up 2 carlson's Xpectations. jeebus, neither allowed Jon 2 answer the questions from the audience @ the end of the show. Begala & carlson hijacked both questions. One of the reasons Jon & The Daily Show has such a dedicated following is in the media whirlwind of endless repetition of lies, deception and blatant inaccuracy, Jon exposes the media's abandonment of reporting THE NEWS. Which is why Jon continually reminds people, like carlson, that The Daily Show is fake news. That and well, carlson just doesn't get it. I doubt that he ever will.

from the cnn link in another post..."Why not create a news organization that isn't liberal but credible?" he asked...."

Indeed, why not?

Jon Stewart did debate Begala and Carlson. Tucker's just whining because he tried to match wits with Stewart, but came to the stage unarmed. Just when I thought Carlson couldn't possibly say anything stupider, he kept talking! Begala, on the other hand, was smart enough to keep his mouth shut for the most part.

62. Nah
I'm not much into tv (we haven't had one in the house for years), but I've seen a few episodes of Stewart's show, and Crossfire is one of many shows that come a dime a dozen. I've watched the video clip, and I have to say that I disagree with you.

Crossfire has an agenda, and expects everyone on their stage to have one too: guests wouldn't be invited if they didn't have one. Their agenda was to have an incisively bright and phenomenally popular comedian come onstage and skewer current affairs while shamelessly self-promoting. This is where Crossfire failed: they assumed that Stewart's agenda would match their expectations. However, Stewart's agenda was simply to tell Carlson and Begala that he thinks what they are doing is bad -- bad journalism, bad practice, bad for America. The show degenerated into insults only after C & B refused to engage with the line of discourse that Stewart initiated. Might I add, it's a topic of discussion that few "journalists" will engage with at all any more.

C & B could have responded to him on that level, and actually engaged in a debate (in fact, they trumpted that Debate is what they're all about), but the wussy pair of them chose instead to complain that Stewart wasn't being funny, that his show is irresponsible, etc.

And now Carlson is criticizing how Jon Stewart looked? That's like the side of beef complaining that the butcher has blood on his coat as he starts to carve.

Edited on Tue Oct-19-04 06:09 PM by PassingFair
look, we're talking about a show which is moderated by a treasonous bastard who most probably is responsible for outing a CIA agent in the field for political purposes. He continues to "host" his quarter of the show. It took real courage for Jon to take the fight right to them.
For all of our "Plame Threads", no member of the administration has been sent up the river.
Half of the country holds their breath.
Jon Stewart just exhaled for us on national TV... In the company of the partisan hacks (and that's exactly what they are)who are SUPPOSED to be INFORMING our country. Even Howard Dean did not go this far, and I say AMEN for Jon.

"Insult the hosts of the show". Indeed.

If we are so cowardly about standing up and speaking out, that when one of us does, we criticize him when his head is cut off, then we will NEVER overcome these criminals who have stolen our country and pulled the rug out from under our democracy.
If we all stood up, their knives would never be long enough, nor sharp enough to cut through us all.

78. perhaps the operative phrase should be. . . .
"disrupted poorly."

Stewart was spot on, in both form and substance. His show is comedy => satire => serious / comedy. It takes a great deal of intelligence not only to do it but to get it. That's why his audience is far better informed than Faux's or CNN's.

Carlson/Novak control Crossfire. Carlson dings his assinine little bell and all the other monkey's jump. Begala and Carville are the Colmeses to the Carlson and Novak Hannities. It's not debate. Get it? IT'S NOT DEBATE.

It is, however, serious, deadly serious. And it has an agenda -- to promote the feudalists.

What Stewart attempted to do -- and his success will only be measured in the future -- was to show that Crossfire is serious => farce => comedy. Novak, Carlson, Begala, and Carville now are in denial.

81. Did you actually see the show? Sounds like not.
Otherwise you would know that Tucker insulted Jon first, by saying that he'd been sniffing John Kerry's throne. I can't imagine anyway he could have *possibly* gone about "it" that would have been more polite. If it had been me there, I would pushed the little bastard's face in. Jon was purely humble about the whole thing (with the possible exception of calling Tucker a dick, which he deserved).

I only heard the streaming audio of the show...but it seemed like they started out right after him saying something to the effect of "You had Kerry so why didn't you confront him with hard questions?"

And if his show does indeed have an agenda, he is honest enough to admit it rather than pretend to present both sides of the issue.

Oh, and his head is just the perfect size. Biggger than Carlson's Little Lord Fauntleroy bow tie but smaller than his ego.

40. Crank-calling puppets.
It seemed to me that Carlson really got his ass handed to him, because he had a hidden agenda for the show. An agenda that failed miserably, I might add. I think Stewart bashes both sides, but he seems much more in tune to the democrat side (although this just may be because the current administration is so incompetent). But Rove and his boys have to see Stewart as a problem; he is having an effect on young voters. I think Carlson wanted Stewart to believe the show would be fun and games, and then he would catch Stewart unaware and blast him. Note that Carlson was all set with his criticism of the questions Stewart asked Kerry. He clearly had it in mind to bring Stewart down a few pegs.

What was so wonderful is that Stewart came out swinging, and, much like the first pres. debate, the candidate who wanted to be on the offensive was suddenly very defensive. Also, Stewart made an ass-clown out of Tucker with the crank-calling puppets line. I showed that to my wife last night, and she almost hurt herself she was laughing so hard.

Begala was smart. He tried to change the subject a few times, and he argued once or twice. But he realized that in a battle of wits Stewart would win handily, so he just shut up. Good move. Carlson didn't shut up, so he ended up looking bad (I'm still laughing about the puppet line).

Last night, John's opening stuff was outrageous. From Novak's hip to the fact Mary Cheney is the only gay person with parents, Stewart was great last night. I only wish they hadn't taken a week and a half off. I would have loved it if they could have devoted more time to the second two debates.

I love the Daily Show.

And whatever team you support? Don't worry. The Lakers won't cause you much trouble this year *sigh*

I'm a Laker fan, a Cub fan, a CU Buffs fan (gee, we sure have been proud of this group, thank God for the Broncos), and a NY Ranger fan (Looks like they are about to have their best season in years). Usually I turn to sports in times of political disappointment. Even that avenue was shut off this year. I started watching the Daily Show this year, and it has been the only bastion of light in an otherwise gloomy year. Kerry better win or this year is going to completely suck.

80. Begala wasn't smart -- he was wimped.
He's been a wimp ever since he got on this show. He is so worried about losing his gravy train that HE is the buttboy, not Stewart.

If Begala had ever stood up to Carlson's bullying, Crossfire might actually be a legitimate political debate program. But he's wimped out to the boy in the bowtie, and I can't forgive him for that or let him use it as an excuse.

<snip>

Accusing him of "selling out," Carlson said. "If you are a satirist or an acute social observer, and (Stewart) is, and all of a sudden you suspend disbelief on someone or suck up rather than prod or poke someone, people will look at you and say, `Even if I agree with you, I don't like it.'"

Do you think Carlson would say such a thing about, say, the formerly funny Dennis Miller, who openly supports George W. Bush on his CNBC show?
