At one point, the Saudis proposed that Muslim forces be placed under the command of the Iraqi government. That idea won over Allawi, but not the United States. "The Americans wanted ultimate control, and that made it impossible to make this work," said the Iraqi official.

Bush rebuffed a plan … for a Muslim peacekeeping force that would have helped the United Nations organize elections in Iraq, according to Saudi and Iraqi officials. As a result, the UN continues to have a skeletal presence in Iraq, … Kofi Annan has refused to establish a new UN headquarters in Baghdad unless countries commit troops for a special force to protect it…Prince Abdullah, personally lobbied Bush in July to sign off on the plan to establish a contingent of several hundred troops from Arab and Muslim nations. …Diplomats said Annan accepted the plan. But the Bush administration objected because the special force would have been controlled by the UN instead of by U.S. military officers who run the Multi-National Force in Iraq.

6. Since Bush never admits a mistake or takes responsibility for anything, |

I'm sure he and his "crowd" would stand by this no matter how it appears to the rest of the world, the U. N. or anyone in the media who chose to report it and possibly (but not likely) take issue with the decision.
This is sad, infuriating, completely frustrating, but alas, true in this mis-administration. Just one of a million reasons why we must...
DEFEAT BUSH!!

7. They didn't want too many witnesses around |

They plan to make sure Allawi steals this election, and the presence of Muslim peacekeepers would have jeopardized that plan. Also, they didn't want Muslim peacekeepers to see the general carnage up close.

This looks like a possible political trap. Hope Kerry doesn't bite.
I.e., anyone supporting sending Saudi peacekeepers would be characterized as naive; "great way to make it easy for terrorists to take over Iraq".
Personally I think there should be Muslim peacekeepers there, but I think it would be politically risky for the Dems to say so at this time.
