Feds: 2.6 miilion more flu vaccines coming

WASHNGTON (CBS.MW) -The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said Tuesday that it has secured another 2.6 million doses of flu vaccine from this year's only major supplier, Sanofi Aventis.

These additional doses will be shipped to the United States in January, said HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson in a news conference.

That brings the total available flu vaccines to about 58 million doses, including the additional Aventis (AVE: news, chart, profile) shipments and roughly two million doses of Medimmune's (MEDI: news, chart, profile) FluMist inhaled Flu vaccine.

Thompson said that about half of the existing U.S. flu vaccine supply has been distributed to health clinics and that the remaining 24 million vaccine doses will be distributed throughout the United States at a rate of about two to three million each week. .......... (more)

2. Aventis is/was a German/French company

The former Hoechst AG; now it got taken over by the French Sanofi. AFAIK it has a vaccine plant in Pennsylvania and is the holder of one of the two Flu Vaccine licenses.

I already knew there was a lot of consolidation, but it seems to have accelerated dramatically in just the last few years (worldwide) I was surprised to see the number of hand-changing in ownership of this liverpool factory.

Do you know offhand previous mergers for Aventis? It'd be interesting to trace the mergers of the whole pharmaceutical field worldwide.
