For Calif. GOP, It's Principles vs. Potential
Republicans May Look Past Weaker Conservative Credentials in Hopes of a Win

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 31 -- State Assemblyman Ray Haynes is one of the most conservative members of the California legislature, but when he looks at the stakes involved in next month's recall election here, the choice is clear. He's for a Republican who can win.

(snip)

"I'll be real blunt," Haynes said in an interview. "I was involved in the recall with Tom McClintock from the beginning, but I didn't get involved in this to hand the governorship over to Cruz Bustamante. That's something I need to be cognizant of and other conservatives need to be cognizant of."

(snip)

Already conservatives have seen two of their own -- Rep. Darrell Issa, who bankrolled the recall petition drive, and Bill Simon, the businessman who narrowly lost to Davis in November -- quit the race. They now face an unhappy choice: support a candidate in Schwarzenegger who is anything but a true believer or stick to principles, back McClintock and risk being blamed if Republicans lose the governor's office once again.

"They're very confused," former state GOP chairman John Herrington said of party conservatives. "They want to win. They're tired of backing losers."

Schwarzenegger's advisers know that, for all his potential appeal outside the GOP, the road to power in Sacramento must begin in conservative territory. In essence, the novice candidate is being forced to win a de facto Republican primary before he can shift his focus to reaching beyond the GOP's base. He has made some progress, but he faces a stubborn adversary in McClintock, who got more votes than any other Republican on the ballot here in 2002 when he narrowly lost the election for state controller.

3. Yeah, the latest poll shows Schwarzy at 45% Bustamante at 29%
http://www.surveyusa.com/currentelectionpolls.html (excerpt farther down)

Does anyone know about that group?

Pretty bad news, but maybe it will help spur us on. Looks like local action and getting out the vote will be critical this time. We have the numbers, but they are in uncertain voters (poll below shows certain voters).

Californians, we should sign up with the Dem party (and tell them not to waste your time, as they have done to people before). (If you're not in CA you can support us on mixed message boards, because being out of state isn't stopping the right wingers and Schwarzenegger supporters.)

Pass out information on recall at local stores, malls.

Here is a site for anti-recall material.

LT Governor's site (biography but no real campaign material): http://www.ltg.ca.gov/about/biography.asp

These people say that buying one of their Tshirts etc will get the message out for Bustamante:

Finally I found a Bustamante for governor site. They have a poster to download and information.
And a place to sign up to volunteer.

I think I will continue making up my own pamphlet though from what I see.

4. Survey USA had Simon beating Davis in 2002
The (Survey USA) results bear witness -- poll predictions were 21 points off in the Texas senate primary, and 19 points off the California guvernatorial primary.

5. Thank You Democrat!!!!
Survey USA is the only poll that has shown the Dem's to be loosing in this heavily Democratic State!!! I do NOT trust the Survey USA Poll!!! Survey USA targets it;s services to "low budget local television news stations"!!! Now how trustworthy are they???

8. About this poll.
The right-wing Hugh Hewitt Show was hosting Schwarzenegger cheerleader Rep. David Dreier who is promoting a yet-to-be-released "ABC poll" that shows the recall ahead "63% to 35%" with Schwarzenegger leading Bustamante "45% to 29%." I have to use quotes around these figures they're so bogus! Two points need to be made about this poll:

First, the poll was conducted by "Survey USA" (http://www.surveyusa.com/) for a few ABC affiliates. The notable thing about the poll is that the pool of respondees in composed of what Survey USA calls "Certain Voters." This only includes, I have heard, those who have voted in the past two elections and answer other questions satisfactorily. During the 2002 gubernatorial race, the polls, which were more accurate, used a different methodology of "Likely Voters." (See http://www.surveyusa.com/electiontrackrecord.html) Of course, narrowing the field to only the most absolutely certain voters will produce a more right-leaning result. With voter interest in this election at a high level, we expect HIGHER turnout than in 11/2002.

Second, the last Survey USA poll on the recall, conducted on 8/9-8/10, showed the recall leading by a WIDER margin of "66% to 32%." AND, Schwarzenegger had a MUCH LARGER lead over Bustamante of "51% to 17%"! (See poll at http://www.surveyusa.com/currentelectionpolls.html)If we are to take anything from this new poll, we must see that this poll's Schwarzenegger lead has been better than sliced in half, from 34 points to only 16 points. And the recall support has waned by six points as well. That is very significant, even in a deeply flawed poll.

they are really between a "rock and a hard place", does arnie go hardcore kook RW and lose the general population or does he tough it out and lose the kook RW for the sake of the average Californian? Should be interesting to see him prostitute himself one way or the other.
