Lawmakers request CIA's 9/11 report
By Greg Miller Tribune Newspapers: Los Angeles Times

The ranking members of the House Intelligence Committee have asked the CIA (news - web sites) to turn over an internal report on whether agency employees should be held accountable for intelligence failures leading up to the Sept. 11 attacks, congressional officials said Tuesday.

•The CIA so far hasn't responded to the request, raising concerns among some Democrats in Congress that the report is being withheld to avoid political embarrassment for the Bush administration in the final weeks before the presidential election.

The report was drafted in response to a demand from Congress nearly two years ago for the CIA to conduct an inquiry into the performance of agency personnel before the attacks. In particular, the agency was asked "to determine whether and to what extent personnel at all levels should be held accountable" for intelligence breakdowns catalogued in a joint congressional investigation of Sept. 11, 2001.

Congressional officials said they were told that the CIA inspector general's office had completed the report in July, but that it wouldn't be turned over because of a request by then-acting CIA Director John McLaughlin for additional information on the report's contents.

"The concern here is that this has gone from days to week to months," said a senior congressional aide, who asked not to be identified. "We're concerned that the work of the inspector general not be altered or censored or in any way precluded from coming over here."

4. If they won't release the report, Kerry should call them on it and
speculate as to the contents.....the only refute would be to release them.

5. I agree - this definitely reeks of a cover-up
of facts.

I hope Kerry uses some very descriptive terms regarding the non-release of this report.

7. "The report found very senior-level officials responsible."

By law, the only legitimate reason the CIA director has for holding back such a
report is national security. Yet neither Goss nor McLaughlin has invoked
national security as an explanation for not delivering the report to Congress.

....
According to the intelligence official, who spoke to me on condition of
anonymity, release of the report, which represents an exhaustive
seventeen-month investigation by an eleven-member team within the agency, has
been "stalled." First by acting CIA Director John McLaughlin and now by
Porter J. Goss, the former Republican House member (and chairman of the
Intelligence Committee) who recently was appointed CIA chief by President
Bush.

....
"It surely does not involve issues of national security," said the intelligence
official.

"The agency directorate is basically sitting on the report until after the election,"
the official continued. "No previous director of CIA has ever tried to stop the
inspector general from releasing a report to the Congress, in this case a report
requested by Congress."

13. Well we now know Goss's role
to continue the cover-up. Obviously he knows what's in it and did before they named him as the new director. There is no way that congress is going to get this information out in time. No way.

And I DO think Kerry and Edwards should make a HUGE stink over it.
