Drew T. Durham referred to a black colleague as a "Sambo" and was known to make racist and sexist comments, according to former Texas attorney general employees quoted in a 1994 story in the Texas Lawyer newspaper. Durham is now director of the Help America Vote Act department in Secretary of State Donetta Davidson's office.
The issue became public after the Rocky Mountain Progressive Network posted the Texas story on its website.
"The Rocky Mountain Progressive Network has received thousands of visitors to our website inquiring whether these allegations are true, and at this point we are taking their concerns very seriously and are investigating," said the group's executive director, Michael Huttner.
Durham said the charges stem from a personnel dispute, but he declined to provide details, citing worker confidentiality...
