In about-face, UN accepts possible US protection in Iraq

In an about-face acknowledging the rough situation on the ground in Iraq, UN officials said they would no longer object to US soldiers protecting their personnel in the country.

The announcement came after a fruitless search for other nations that would contribute troops to a dedicated force planned to guard UN staff in Iraq, where the United Nations is trying to organise elections by January.
