Dean brings message of hope to Walpole

By DANIEL BARLOW
Reformer Staff

WALPOLE, N.H. -- Hope was the theme Saturday as Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor and now the Democratic front-runner in the first-in-the-nation primary state, attracted more than 1,200 supporters to a rural home, the largest draw so far for the candidate in the state.

Dean's appearance nearly an hour late didn't dampen the enthusiasm of his supporters as they shouted, "Go, Dean, Go!" eagerly waiting to hear the man they hope can defeat President Bush in next year's general election.

"Isn't it great that when someone finally begins to tell the truth to the American people, we listen," shouted Rep. Jack Pratt, D-Walpole, into a microphone, after announcing that the line of cars waiting to arrive was backed nearly a mile down a nearby dirt road.

Saturday's appearance, one of four scheduled by Dean in the state that day, took place at Pratt's spacious home on Reservoir Road, with a view of Vermont's Green Mountains in the background. All over the tiny New Hampshire town that morning Dean supporters waving signs directed supporters to Pratt's home.

Hundreds of cars parked in three fields near Pratt's house, and a scan of the license plates revealed supporters from New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut and even Alaska.

1. Wow!!
Great turn-out! Great article!! Loved this:

His speech drew some of the largest roars from the audience when he voiced his opposition to the war in Iraq and when he made sly stabs at Bush's administration and policies.

When that resolution was being voted on I clearly recall many here were calling their Senators and Reps. Everyone was reporting that the offices were saying they were getting calls that were at about 10/1 against the war. This gave me great hope.

Apparently though, many of the Dems were listening to someone other than the constituents calling.......I can't describe the feeling of let-down when I watched those votes cast.

You'd think by now they'd learn to listen to the people but to hear some speak today, defending that vote, well, apparently they haven't.

Julie

Where are sfcap's photos?

Dean's campaign is going so much better than my wildest dreams.

We, the People are awake. We've just not had someone to listen to us.
