Lord Butler, the ex-Whitehall mandarin who led the inquiry into intelligence failings on Iraq, will face questions from MPs today on the conduct of his investigation. The former Cabinet Secretary will appear before the Commons Public Administration Committee which is looking into the operation of official inquiries.
It has already taken evidence from Lord Hutton, the former law lord who carried out the investigation in the death of the government weapons scientist Dr David Kelly.
In his report, Lord Butler concluded that intelligence on Iraq’s weapons programmes had been “flawed” and that the Government had failed to make clear the weakness of the information it was relying on when it made the case for war.Although he was more critical of the Government than Lord Hutton had been in his earlier report, critics complained that he still let ministers off the hook with his measured use of language.
MPs are not expected to question Lord Butler about his findings, but instead concentrate on the way his inquiry carried out its work.
