Lawsuit could disrupt voting in New Jersey
By ANGELA DELLI SANTI
Associated Press Writer

October 20, 2004, 8:15 PM EDT

TRENTON, N.J. -- A lawsuit seeking to ban electronic voting machines in 15 counties could cause chaos on Election Day if it's successful, according to a former federal election monitor.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Mercer County Superior Court, says electronic voting machines are unreliable and prone to manipulation, and asks a judge to forbid their use. Residents should vote on machines that use backup paper ballots to record results, the suit contends.

The Constitutional Litigation Clinic at Rutgers University, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of a state lawmaker, Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, D-Mercer, and two advocacy groups _ Coalition for Peace Action and New Jersey Peace Action _ did not return calls for comment on Wednesday.
