Largest Newspaper of World's Largest Navy Installation Backs John Kerry!
Hampton Roads, VA, is home to the world's largest naval installation and it' s main newspaper, The Virginian-Pilot, endorsed John Kerry today -- a break from their historical backing of Republican candidates!'

6. THIS IS A BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!
The Democratic guy running for Congress in that district to replace Ed "Closet" Schrock is a USMC reservist who has been to the sandbox. I would love to see that area go for Kerry and the Marine.

One thing about the Navy, they do favor their own, and with good reason. Think back to JFK--you saw more Sailors hanging around the White House, and more Navy Honor Guards, during his administration than you EVER did since his administration.

I think the Navy ADCOM in DC better get the kids out practicing on the grinder....left, left, left, right, left!

A course change: The Virginian-Pilot endorses John Kerry

The Virginian-Pilot
October 21, 2004

George W. Bush oiled the troubled waters of his 2000 election by promising to govern as a unifier and a compassionate conservative.

Four years later, the nation is more bitterly split than ever. That is because the president abandoned the middle ground of the Republican Party in favor of its ideological edge.

He discourages internal dissent, equates disagreement with disloyalty and presents the terrorist attacks of 9/11 as an unassailable justification for whatever course the administration takes.

If polls are correct, half of America stands ready to reward his performance with a second term. Their trust rests on faith in the transparency of Bush’s character, that you get what you see, that no one believes more fervently than Bush that freedom is rising abroad and prosperity is around the corner at home.

16. WTF????????????????????????????????????????????
THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT????? NO FUCKING WAY!!!!!!!

OMG. That is a WAY conservative newspaper. My in laws live there and read that paper DAILY. WHEW!

Makes you wonder what the hell the Dallas Morning News and the Ft. Worth Star-Telegrams' problems are. Oh yeah don't want to freak out their corporate sponsors by not endorsing bush boy. Guess how they endorsed him? The Dallas Morning News simply used the fear/terrorism angle and admitted he has fucked up on MOST everything. The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram gave new meaning to the phrase "damning with faint praise" when they listed everything he has screwed up, then said "we are endorsing the President Bush we thought we were getting in 2000."

OH MY GOD. So now they want a fucking TIME MACHINE????

anyway, glad to hear some papers have some sense.

18. editor & publisher's daily tally is now 58-45
one thing that stands is the fact that only one paper that went for gore in 2000 is endorsing bush this year, whereas 9 papers that went for bush last year are now endorsing kerry.

...and the word on the street is very pro-Kerry. She is stationed in the Green Zone (International Zone), so there is alot of military personnel about.

The soldiers know who the real military leader is in this election.

27. My husband, a Vietnam-era Navy vet, got excited over this one
Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 09:39 PM by Sparkly
He pointed it out to me after reading your post, jaznme. It must be a really big deal in the Navy world!

A very strong endorsement, too. He says the campaign ought to have all the public surrogates memorize this passage, to quote it everywhere:

Contrary to claims that he tilts with the prevailing winds, Kerry has throughout his lifetime charted an independent course. His zigs and zags reflect his digestion of new information and his arrival at new insights, not slavish devotion to public opinion. There is no better example of his convictions than his decades-long involvement with Vietnam. As a young man he elected to go to war at a time when few of his economic and social class took such personal risk. Disillusioned by the experience, he came home to challenge the moral justification for that war at the highest levels of government. Over time, the prevailing historical view of the Vietnam War has aligned with Kerry’s. But when he spoke out in Washington, his was a minority voice. Then, as decades passed and the nation wanted nothing more than to forget Vietnam, Kerry insisted on a more honorable conclusion.
