Scoop for Local Reporter: Ex-CIA Chief Tenet Calls Iraq War 'Wrong'
NEW YORK The guest speaker was famous, and he was visiting a small town far from the spotlight of network TV cameras and the reach of big-name reporters from national newspapers. In other words: It was a perfect scenario for a local reporter to snag an exclusive. And Anna Clark, correspondent for The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph, Mich., was there to grab it.

Addressing the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan Wednesday night, George Tenet, former director of central intelligence, called the war on Iraq "wrong," according to Clark's article today. Tenet added that while the Iraq war was "rightly being challenged," the CIA was making important strides toward success in the greater war on terrorism.

12. Not all that late. read Clarke's book - he tried more than St Powell
I never believed Woodward's "slam dunk" story. If Tenant was so easy, why did Dick have to build his own prinate CIA?

So where are the national media on this? Are Kerry and Edwards going to mention it? Send this to the campaign so they know about it.

21. But as soon as KE2004 mention Tenet
The Bush campaign will be happy to say the war in Iraq was Tenet's fault cause he provided the faulty intelligence.

10. The article makes it appear he is blaming
faulty intelligence by the CIA.

Nowhere does he blame the politicos.

Sounds like he is trying to be politically correct.

20. Not much reaction...
since we have known it was wrong from the get-go..

There is only so much pointing out the obvious you can do before you realize the other side is simply blind.

23. Me too
I posted the same article yesterday and it sunk like a rock. I couldn't help but wonder if this was a prelude to Tenet saying even more. There's also a post on DU about Levin going after Feith for changing intelligence reports to Congress. Hope it's a concerted effort.

24. If there isn't much of a reaction here
there will be no mainstream interest.

Tenet would have to endorse Kerry to get a mainstream story, they they'd dismiss it because he is a Democrat.

28. Powell should be next
but I don't expect him to summon the courage. He seems to have had a integrity-ectomy. Where's the guy I respected as a military man not so long ago? When did he lose his back bone?(rhetorical)When did he lose his self-respect?

At some point a strong military leader whithered and agreed to be a yes man. In my eyes he has lost the high ground, moral authority and/or credibility he spent his life earning. The U.N. testimony was obviously the low point. Easy come, easy go I guess. Maybe he could sell a book after he's out of a job...

Who's next to out "*"? Rummy??

35. Integrity Shrinkage Widespread
Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 03:39 PM by grumpy old fart
Some guys who used to trade heavily on their integrity are being taken down by the chimp, or are they just being exposed? Or does the chimp have something on them? Speaking of Powell and McCain, of course. The real shame of it is a Powell/McCain ticket would have at some point, on the face of it, been an easy winner and a real step forward for the country. But now.....

29. This deserves a TON of press
The CIA was blamed for the "intelligence failures" going into this bogus war and one of their operatives was outed for political revenge because of this bogus war. Is it smart to screw with this organization?

36. Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan???
Wow! You'd think George could do better than that. And why would he give a scoop to a local when he could have made instant headlines talking to one of his old contacts? This is either weird, or Tenet's in tough shape

38. Tenet Story Clarified
Former CIA Director George Tenet told the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan on Wednesday that the United States was wrong on its pre-war intelligence in Iraq, but an article in Thursday's Herald-Palladium may have put the comment in an incorrect context.

The story said Tenet called the war in Iraq "wrong." However, after reviewing the reporter's notes (Tenet barred reporters from using tape recorders), the newspaper now believes Tenet used the word "wrong" in the context of U.S. intelligence, not on the direct question of whether the United States should be in Iraq.
Here are excerpts of Tenet's comments from the reporter's notes:

(Although) "we were wrong in Iraq ... (the CIA) is not the dysfunctional lot the media has led you to believe."

"We are rightly being challenged on our performance in Iraq."

....
