DoD Identifies Marine Casualty

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Marine who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Sgt. Douglas E. Bascom, 25, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Oct. 20 as result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Bascom, a member of the Individual Ready Reserves, was mobilized and assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif

1. it reminds me of Vietnam...the FIRST killed were written up BIG TIME

with everything about their lives and their glorious service...now, it's just a number, NO FACE, no family....

when my cousin was KILLED in Vietnam (19 years old, Silver Star, Purple Heart, HM3 Navy Medic)....there was just a small list of DEAD soldiers in the Detroit News...page 17A, right under a story about a poodle show, on the same page with a story about the Heritage Institute's new book: if we leave Vietnam, it'll be a DOMINO EFFECT, and red communists will take over the world....

just a short list, each with the name, rank, and hometown (Detroit or suburban towns, Dearborn, Royal Oak, etc.)...that was it...nothing else....

of course, no one knew HOW MANY DIED IN VIETNAM, until the Vietnam Wall was built...only then did the full horror come through and the total numbers of American DEAD began to be counted....the pentagon did all it could to keep the numbers from the American people....
