Young Close to Entering Senate Race in Georgia
Andrew Young, the former Atlanta mayor and U.N. ambassador, is leaning strongly toward entering what is widely regarded as an uphill fight to keep the seat of retiring Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.) in Democratic hands, according to a source familiar with Young's thinking.

Young, 71, a veteran civil rights leader and former U.S. House member, has been talking for several weeks about the possibility of running. Now he has "all but decided to make the race" and may move soon to announce his plans, the Democratic campaign source said.

4. Ya Know, This Might Be A Hell Of An Opportunity Here !!!
My thinking, fresh off the top of my head, goes like this:

The Dems need to encourage people like Andrew Young and other leaders in the minoirity community to run for office, especially in states where the vote counting is 'questionable'. They need to remind their supporters, and the electorate in general, of the obstacles thrown in their way in Election 2000. They need to emphasize the concerns with touch screen voting which may be yet another attempt to disenfranchise them. They need to energize the minority vote in general, and we non-minorities need to throw our support right behind them, because apparently, we are all now facing obstacles to our right to vote.

Instead of taking the minority vote for granted, as many seem to think we do (doesn't matter whether that's reality or perception in the final analysis, right?), we join forces in a big way, remind everyone of the fight to get the Voting Rights Act passed in the first place, and hopefully expose the racism still prevalent in most of the 'red states', hell, in all the states.

Maybe the moderates, independents, and soccer moms, who are still leaning toward the security angle in this election round, will be so turned off by the 'confederate minded' that they'll jump back to the Dem side as opposed to being associated with the Jim Crow side of the fight???

Anywho, need a second cup of java, tell me if this makes any sense out there!!!

7. SEEMS TO ME AS THOUGH ITS WORKING
Andrew Young's past actions speak well to the situation of today's Democratic Party. There were then and are now two mutually exclusive responses to the relative conditions. One is to speak to the wind within the rules of the past in dim hopes of change. The other is to act to so strikingly polarize outlooks that those ways can no longer form the rules of the day.

As Emiliano Zapata put it in another time and place, "Es major para morir de pie que vivir de rodilla", It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees. He died as spoken, but a nation rose to stand victoriously. There were over 40 that died in the struggle symbolized in Selma and elsewhere by Andrew Young and others, but many more stood and walked on.

It is not up to those of the white Democratic Party to fashion the modes of its Black minority. As in the past, the former, in their comfortable lack of understanding, might do well by listening, learning from, and emulating the latter, who in pain can view the situation as it is and say "no more".

8. Makes sense to me! I live in GA.
I doubt Andy can hold that Senate Seat for the Dems, but with a strong turnout from African Americans we could add two or more house seats to the Dem column in the House.

9. Yeah
The 12th district has a 42.3% black population and it has a freshman republican. High black turnout will be important if we want to take this democratic leaning district. Also, the 11th district has a black population of 28.2% and another fresman republican that could be vulnerable. Andy Young could really help in these districts.
