UP students duped into changing party affiliation
THIS IS JUST GREAT!! When I was in line to get into Michael Moore in Reno over a week ago, some kid asked me to sign a petition asking the same thing. I'd better go find out if my party has changed. Dammit!!!

Story parts are here:

The old caveat, read the fine print before you sign, has taken on new meaning for some students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

An official from the Indiana County Voter Registration Office estimated Tuesday that several hundred IUP students had been duped into registering as Republicans several weeks ago.

The duplicity occurred, voter registration chief Donna Hoover said, because forms that the students thought they were signing to support efforts to legalize marijuana for medicinal use were actually used to register them as Republicans.

No one has lost his or her ability to vote this fall, Hoover stressed. "It is not going to make a difference for these students this time." Voters, regardless of party registration, can select any candidate on the ballot on Nov. 2. Party registration will make a difference, however, in the primary election, when voters can only choose candidates of their party affiliation.

4. Actually this year I did!
Florida has closed primaries & I wanted to vote for the sheriff's race & since no Democrat was running I couldn't vote.

& the incumbant got thrown out on his ass, which is what we intended to do.

11. You didn't have to change your party affiliation--in Florida
if there is no Democrat running you can vote in the Republican primary. We had a similar situation in a county race, and I voted for the lesser of two evils.

8. "Whats the big deal?"
"however, in the primary election, when voters can only choose candidates of their party affiliation."

If they don't find out before the primary and correct it, they're SOL if they want to vote for any Democrat.

3. I signed the same thing, but I only saw spaces for... Also, go here to...
...The normal, legitimate stuff you're supposed to sign for a petition. I saw no request for party affiliation or proof of US citizenship, nor was I asked to by anyone.

...check your registration status. I'm still the same DEM I've been since April 23, 1999.

5. thanks, I will have to go to my own County and they aren't online
I can't remember what all I had to write, just remember having a hard time writing on a clip board and walking up the steps at the same time. Hope it was all unreadable. I want to early vote and haven't done it yet. I will check it out.

What would be the purpose, besides skewing public perception of more Bush supporters, in falsely getting someone to change their party???

6. Only screwing themselfs
It makes the republicans look like they have more support then they do. And totaly screw with the polls.

And it just pisses voters off. Not everyone votes straight party ticket, no matter the patry.

The bitter will be when the voter tries to vote in a primary. If this happened to me and I didn't know about it in time... I might try to get the guy most likely to loose against the democrat nomniated as the republican canidate. <grin> Hey, they wanted my opinion... right?

7. That's IUP not UP! My fellow Indians!
Seriously, I'm sick of these fascists. I would definitely support the death penalty for such fascist tactics. Am I alone?

Helpful hints to avoid duplicates:
Read the Latest Breaking News forum first before posting. Look for high count threads for obvious stories that have a lot of interest and that have been posted previously.
Do a search of a just a few keywords. Running just the title sometimes does not bring up results.
If you don't have the search option because you don't donate, consider donating, or look on the right column of the latest page. Scan the column for posts made in the last day.
