Boston Mayor Wants To Ban Liquor Sales During World Series

POSTED: 11:58 am EDT October 22, 2004
UPDATED: 12:33 pm EDT October 22, 2004

BOSTON -- Boston Mayor Tom Menino is expected to meet with bar owners in the city Friday to discuss safety precautions for the World Series.

The meeting comes after the death of 21-year-old Emerson College student Victoria Snelgrove, who was struck by police pepper spray after Wednesday night's game.

"A lot of those establishments were overcrowded during the first series. I will not tolerate that. Live (TV) cameras inside incites the young people," Menino said.

Menino said that rowdy bar goers in the Fenway area contributed to Wednesday's Game 7 riot, in which Snelgrove was fatally injured.

Having been to serveral Raiders games deep in the heart of oakland i can tell you first hand that easing up on the booze intake may help.

16. Better hope the curse is broken
Boston without beer during a Red Sox World Series. People just make this stuff up, right?

I'll bet Oakland drinkers are different than Boston drinkers, but the two words (used in any order) "Alcohol Ban" has always proven wildly unpopular, and never successful. Let them try to ban it, have a bunch of angry Sox fans all week, and then see what happens if the Sox don't break the curse. The alcohol would pour anyway and the anger would be tangible.
That would have to be about the meanest scene I could imagine.

2. He could just declare a city wide curfew
Or martial law!

I'm sure that the business community would get behind that as quickly as a ban on alcohol sales. /sarcasm

6. They'll all end up in neighboring cities like Cambridge and Somerville
there are college students here too: Tufts, MIT, Harvard, Lesley, etc. Menino is out of his mind. Bar and restaurant owners will protest this I'm sure.

22. Those trigger happy idiots really blew it. My only regret is that it took
so long for this kind of outrage....and it took tke death of a pretty whith female. Damn this was tragic...as were many needless deaths before this. Banning booze in Boston during a world Series..It won't happen.

9. Newsflash - it was a cop's projectile that killed her, Mr Mayor
not her or anyone else being drunk.

12. Did I miss something or has everyone else? ".....PEPPER SPRAY"
"struck by police pepper spray". Pepper spray killed this young lady? I thought it was a non-lethal or less than lethal projectile fired into the crowd, probably very similar to what was used in Oakland and in Miami that killed her, not "pepper spray". Being hit in the face with pepper spray usually results in lots of burning sensations, difficulty in breathing, rarely death.

13. Pepper spray canister in the eye
That's what I heard on New England Cable News. Some sort of pepper spray canister/projectile that they fire into the middle of the crowd.

18. no, they're playing with words to reduce police culpability. she was hit
with a projectile designed to be fired at the ground where it breaks up and then "peppers" the "rioters" with small projectiles. now they're trying to change the story, and make it sound like she was hit with pepper spray or a pepper spray canister.

Potheads are Not Hotheads: Portugal Temporarily Lifts Marijuana Restrictions for Soccer Tourney
June 15, 2004

Fans attending the Euro 2004 soccer tournament, now taking place in Portugal, are being treated to relaxed enforcement of the country's marijuana laws. Instead, Portuguese police are focusing their resources on preventing terrorism and combating soccer hooliganism.

The nation's leading law enforcement authorities have concluded that leaving marijuana smokers alone will help achieve both these objectives. The calming effect of smoking marijuana makes fans less likely to fight, while ignoring marijuana use allows police to focus more resources on preventing real crime - such as a terrorist attack.

Cops just need to be smart about crowd control.
Snatching people's liqour isn't freedom... that what the terrorist would want.
