Nursing home has at least 2 cases

The first confirmed influenza outbreak in the city this season was reported in a Manhattan nursing home yesterday amid the nation's worst flu vaccine shortage.
Two seniors at the privately run Northern Manhattan Nursing Home in Harlem had laboratory-verified cases of influenza, and an additional nine were showing flulike symptoms, said Bill Van Slyke, a spokesman for the state Health Department, which licenses nursing homes.

"This is nothing out of the ordinary. We expect to see it this time of year," he said.

Although the outbreak at the 320-bed nursing home would normally be considered routine, the unprecedented vaccine shortage has unleashed anxiety across the nation among those who are most at risk of flu-related complications - seniors and people with chronic health problems.

Pneumonia vaccine protects against, obviously, pneumonia, a serious and potentially fatal complication of influenza.

If you can't get a flu shot and are high risk, talk to your doctor about pneumonia vaccine.
