Florida voters unfazed by broadcast on Kerry's Vietnam record

BY LEON LAZAROFF

Chicago Tribune

TAMPA, Fla. - (KRT) - Undecided voters in the battleground state of Florida are unlikely to be swayed by the program aired Friday evening by Sinclair Broadcasting that keys on Sen. John Kerry and his Vietnam War record, according to many who viewed the broadcast.

After igniting a three-week firestorm of controversy, the program, "A POW Story: Politics, Pressure and the Media," featured little of the vicious partisanship that Democrats and media advocacy groups had feared and that the coverage preceding the broadcast prepared many viewers to expect.

"Parts of it were one-sided, but it was fairly balanced on the whole," said Ralph Berry, a hospital technician, as he and his wife shopped Saturday morning at an outdoor flea market here. "It's not going to change my vote, and I don't think it will change anyone else's."

Initially the broadcast was expected to air on all 62 of Sinclair's television stations around the country and draw heavily from "Stolen Honor: Wounds that Never Heal," a 42-minute anti-Kerry film by producer Carlton Sherwood.

1. "It isn't going to change my vote," said an undecided voter?
What exactly is that vote if you're undecided? I don't think that's an option on the ballot!

3. It could be smarter to *say* you are undecided.
That was a slip of the tongue IMO as lots of those undecideds are actually voting Kerry for many good reasons... it is hard for those with Repuke bosses to oppose their views! I'd play hard to get too. My sister in law has a Repuke boss and she pretends she is undecided because the atmosphere in the workplace makes her feel uncomfortable. One of her Repuke co-workers is upset about healthcare and is voting Kerry but keeps it quiet! She doesn't like what has happened under Bush!

2. Of course the version they did broadcast
Was significantly changed from what they had originally planned to show. (as I remember, it was going to be the "stolen honor" in its entirety, plus some).

What ever happened to the copywright infringement challenge?

4. Perhaps the junta just doesn't grasp the feelings about Vietnam many
people have. Not everybody thinks it was such a grand adventure like the Chicken Hawks seem to believe. A lot of people might just be impressed with anti-war activities. In hindsight, most realize the war was bad policy. Many know it first hand. Rove/Cheney and the naked emperor don't have the perspective millions of others share.

9. I think you're right.
I'm too young to remember Vietnam, so I'm sure that colors my perception, but I'm incredibly impressed by John Kerry's leadership in the antiwar movement. It takes real thoughtfulness and maturity to be willing to admit that the war you participated in wasn't the righteous struggle you were told it was.

5. Keep up the boycott and let them know it!
The fact is the Sinclair advertisers gave us the proverbial finger. Don't LET UP on them, just because the show is over, and it wasn't as bad as some had anticipated.

I email Sinclair advertisers DAILY, and let them know I'm continuing to boycott them, and what's more, I'm spreading the word about them.

Here they are:

6. makes me wonder
how the average person feels when they watch something like this without having any other influence. Can they feel the "smear job"?
