We endorse John Kerry for president.

We believe the Massachusetts senator has the depth of intellect, strength and wisdom necessary to defend our nation against an expanding array of enemies. He possesses the good character and humility necessary to restore credibility and confidence in a White House damaged on both accounts. He has the tools for building true coalitions at home and abroad, keys to tackling the grave challenges that weigh on a stressed world and our divided nation. He is ready today to make a better America, one that does not stand alone, that is as much respected by its friends as it is feared by its foes.

George W. Bush once inspired such hopes, the kind of leadership demanded of the world's lone superpower in time of crisis. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, as Kerry reminded voters during the presidential debates, the whole world stood with this nation, and the whole nation stood with the president. On Sept. 14, 2001, he quite literally rose to the challenge posed by a horrific wrong. Perched atop a fire truck amid Ground Zero ruins, the president promised that those responsible would be held accountable. The assault on al-Qaida and its Taliban sponsors in Afghanistan followed.

Then came Iraq, the president's war of less-than-patient resort, and things have not been the same since.
