The Olympian (WA) endorsement: Kerry ready to lead nation forward
very long endorsement!
http://www.theolympian.com/home/news/20041024/opinion/19817.shtml

Sen. John Kerry is the right man to lead this troubled nation in a new direction. On Nov. 2, South Sound voters should cast their votes for Sen. Kerry and help elect him as the 44th president of the United States of America.

... A panicked nation and an unquestioning Congress followed Bush into war.

Without weapons of mass destruction, there is no case for war.

... It's difficult, during a time of war, to remove a sitting president from office. After all, war is a time for the nation to pull together, to unite behind the country's leaders. But, as this president would say, these are extraordinary times that require extraordinary courage.

The American people must demonstrate their courage by taking this president out of office based on his record on the war, the economy and health care.

Vote for John Kerry on Nov. 2.

1. Sweet! The Tacoma News Tribune also has a great Kerry endorsement
John Kerry is right choice for president

THE NEWS TRIBUNE
Sunday, October 24th, 2004 12:01 AM (PDT)

Blunders in Iraq, reckless fiscal policies, poor environmental record, simplistic worldview make the case against Bush

President George Bush led America into war in Iraq certain that weapons of mass destruction would be found and destroyed. That proved to be an illusion.

He sent our soldiers into Iraq, far too few of them, under the illusion that it would be a cakewalk – that American troops would be hailed as liberators and soon sent home.

However good it is to be rid of Saddam Hussein, the fact is that our venture into Iraq has become a disaster, sapping America’s blood and treasure with no end in sight. The U.S. will be mired in Iraq for years, perhaps more than a decade.

The president prematurely declared victory. The mission is far from accomplished. The occupation has been bungled from the start. For that the president deserves to be held accountable, regardless of the merits of his initial decision to go to war.

3. That's my hometown paper!
Yay, this Olympian is happy that they endorsed Kerry. I wish they hadn't endorsed Sam Reed for Sec of State, but, whatever...:bounce:

4. Nice. Very nice. Looks like the press
found its voice, once again. The Oregonian has endorsed Kerry for president.

I just looked at an election map, and it looks like Washington, Oregon and California are all Kerry states.

Viva la Left Coast :smoke:

5. As an honest question..
I was having this discussion with my friend last night (he's also a progressive Dem), and we were discussing if it is really good form for a paper to actually declare their support for anyone. I mean, for me, I buy a newspaper not for commentary, but, truly for news, as unbiased as possible. I will them make my own determination of the spin etc.

I just remember in journalism in college the whole objective is to be, well.. objective. And by endorsing anyone over someone else, objectivity is lost, even if it is by the editor, not the writers. The NY Post endorsed Bush, and while I didn't buy the Post when it was $.25 or even on freebie days, I also don't want to know who my source of News (NY Times) is supporting, even if it is my candidate. The reason being, it would them make me wonder "are they suppressing something bad about Kerry to polish him up?" or "are they giving a slant when reporting about Bushy?" I just want to keep news organizations as objective as possible.

7. Um, that's what opinion pages are for
Opinion pages have been part of American newspapers since the days of the Revolution or before. Some newspapers, like the Chicago Tribune, have been making endorsements for more than 100 years. No problem as long as the opinions are kept to the opinion page.

Opinions and news are like Church and State-- they can exist in the same medium, but they need to be kept separate.
