Bulgaria Denies Plans for "Iran Attack"
Bulgaria's Defense Minister Nikolay Svinarov refuted reports that during his October 9 meeting with US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld they have discussed possible attack on Iran.

He commented on a report of the Quebecs center for alternative media claiming that at the October meeting the defense ministers from the coalition forces and the US administration have discussed a possible attack on Iran.

I can firmly say that we have not discusses such issues, Svinarov said.

Welcomed to NATO

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all. Good afternoon, and welcome to the White House.

Fifty-five years ago, the representatives of 12 nations gathered here in Washington to sign the North Atlantic Treaty, which established the most successful military alliance in history. Today, we proudly welcome Bulgaria -- (applause) -- Estonia -- (applause) -- Latvia -- (applause) -- Lithuania -- (applause) -- Romania -- (applause) -- Slovakia -- (applause) --and Slovenia. (Applause.) We welcome them into the ranks of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. (Applause.)

President George W. Bush addresses a crowd gathered on the South Lawn to celebrate the induction of seven countries into NATO Monday, March 29, 2004. The countries acceding to the alliance are Latvia, Slovenia, Lithuania, the Slovak Republic, Romania, Bulgaria and Estonia. White House photo by Susan Sterner. When NATO was founded, the people of these seven nations were captives to an empire. They endured bitter tyranny, they struggled for independence, they earned their freedom through courage and perseverance. And today they stand with us as full and equal partners in this great alliance. (Applause.)

Our proud coalition

Al-Sadr has called for his supporters to rise up and seize control of their neighborhoods. Seven US soldiers were killed in the fighting that took place. Other coalition forces have been dragged into the fighting. British forces were battling the Mahdi militia in Amara, and the Italians were involved in running battles in Nassiriya. Since the weekend some 30 US marines have been killed and Bulgaria and Poland have also reported casualties.

"Coalition of the Willing" Sparks Confusion, Amusement
The list of the "coalition of the willing"—issued by the Bush administration in an effort to show it enjoys widespread support in the war against Iraq—has been a source of confusion (and amusement) as countries reacted to being mistakenly included in or excluded from the list. The prime minister of the Solomon Islands alleged that his government was "completely unaware" of its inclusion in the coalition. Slovenia, which does not support the war, was also included in the list instead of Slovakia, which is part of the "coalition of the willing." (During the 2000 campaign, Bush also confused the two nations.) The countries' unsuccessful efforts to be removed from the list led the Washington Post to jokingly compare the "coalition of the willing" to the Hotel California-"you can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave." Angola, Bulgaria, and Poland, all original members of the coalition, demanded to be taken off the list for different reasons, and were all later reinstated in the coalition.
