On NBC: FAA and NTSB loses contact with plane!
Just heard on NBC during the NASCAR race that the FAA and NTSB has lost contact with a Hendrick Motorsports plane as it was going to Martinsville.

The drivers (Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Terry Labonte were NOT on the plane, but still...)

Saying a prayer for those possibly lost.....

regardless of what you think about NASCAR
it's still pretty heartless and cold to say that after they have just suffered a tragedy. I'm sure you would be pretty pissed if after a plane carrying Dems crashed people were saying "f*** Democrats"

7. Here is the story...
The son of NASCAR (news - web sites) owner Rick Hendrick was among 10 people killed Sunday when a small plane headed from Concord to Martinsville crashed in Patrick County in Virginia.

Ricky Hendrick, a former NASCAR driver, died in the incident. John Hendrick, Rick's brother, and Kimberly and Jennifer Hendrick, John's twin daughters, also died in the crash.

The plane was en route to Martinsville Speedway for Sunday's Subway 500. Jimmie Johnson was driving the Hendrick car in the race and was the winner. Officials reportedly lost contact with the plane at about 12:30.

17. Sad and Ironic
Ricky was only 23 or 24. He gave up driving a year ago after a couple bad wrecks. He still had talent but decided to take a safer ownership role. Irony

29. Wait a minute Pinerow
Rick's driver, Jeff Gordon, is the only driver in the top ten who didn't support/endorse Bush. If I remember right, he was also pardoned by Clinton during the end of the good old days.

31. With all due respects if you can't say something nice.........
Take a step back and realize that fellow humans just died, regardless of affiliation or profession. They did nothing wrong beyond entertaining folks, regardless of whether we enjoy it or not or who they support for President. I know that we're all a little tense here, but some things are more important than politics.

My prayers go out to the lost and to those who have lost. May the Lord grant them peace.

I saw the end of the race, Jimmie Johnson won, and he didn't even go to victory lane to get his trophy, they whisked him away right away.

This is a HUGE catastrophe for the Hendrick family and the sport..

Rick Hendrick's son, who was being groomed to possibly take his place, and owned a race team.. his twin daughters.. the VP of Hendricks, all apparently perished in this crash..

How utterly and unbeleivably horrible!

Hendrick plane goes down

John Hendrick, Ricky Hendrick, Randy Dorton among those on board

By JIM UTTER

ThatsRacin.com Writer

A Hendrick Motorsports plane carrying two pilots and eight other passengers crashed into Bull Mountain, about 10 miles west of Martinsville, Va., site of Sunday's Subway 500 NASCAR Nextel Cup race, the FAA confirmed.

FAA spokeswoman Arlene Murray said a Beechcraft airplane owned by Hendrick left Concord (N.C.) Regional Airport and crashed about 12:30 p.m. Eastern time Sunday, near Martinsville Speedway.

33. Damn...
...the list of those who perished in the crash, apparently include but are not limited to:

**Rick Hendrick's brother, John, who is also President of the orginization..

**Rick Hendirck's son, who was his protege and who was starting to take a a bigger roll in the company and owned his own race team already..

**2 twin daughters of either Rick himself or his brother, Rick's neices if that were the case,.. (conflicting reports on which of these two cases it really is)

**The VP and general Manager of Hendrick Motorsports, Jeff Turner...

**Randy Dorton, the team's chief engine builder...

**Tony Stewart's personal pilot, who hapened to be on the plane..

**Two pilots of the aircraft were also lost, Dick Tracy and Liz Morrison.

;(

I *cannot* imagine how he must feel right now, a HUGE swath of his family, as well as huge part of the business he has worked his whole life on, just wiped out in a second.

Prayer and best wishes all the way around for the Hendrick family and the drivers.

(The drivers and the race teams were all a big part at Hendirck, like a big family, no wonder Jimmie didn't even go to victory lane, this is gonna hit the drivers and crews unbeleivably hard)

I expect next Sunday's race broadcast to be pretty heartbreaking and very somber... if they even race at all.

Man....

Heyo

36. Yes indeed...
When was this taken?

I know they cut off the broadcast right after the race, they usually interview drivers after the race and yak about it for a while.. this time they just said that they had whisked Jimmy, and Jeff (and Vickers I am sure) away to the trailer and the abruptly ended the broadcast in a quick way I have never seen before.

I am sure it is because those 3 announcers who call the races are very close with the Hendrick family, and didn't care much to be on TV after that. The held their composure though.

Poor Jimmy, he does look like he just got some news that he can't even believe..

What a way to have your win soured... I'm sure the win is the last thinkg on his mind though.

Heyo
