Last Christmas, I got my sister in Missouri a subscription to the New Yorker - she's pretty liberal but not much of a magazine reader. She looked quizzical about it and she probably wondered why in the hell I'd gotten it for her.
I wouldn't have known it at the time, but what a year for this classic old magazine. They've broken important story after important story, and the acid tone of their writing has been razor-sharp. The covers this year alone have been worth the subscription price.
What's funny is that after the first issue she was hooked - the thing is read cover to cover as soon as it arrives. She asked me to renew it for her this Christmas, so I've finally hit on a winner :)

9. Unfortunately, tens of millions of likely voters still don't get it, |
|
including most of those eaten up with ideological or religious zealotry, gun nuts, racist nuts, anti-abortion nuts, homophobic nuts, and a general garden-variety of other nuts pandered to by the far right.

7. With all these endorsements, if Bush wins... |
|
the journalists only have themselves to blame. Where have they been the last three years?

8. They're all saying the same thing |
|
I've read a lot of the endorsements that the vast majority of newspapers have written. They are very similar.
The newspapers are unanimous in that Bush has been a colossal failure. International, domestic, the war in Iraq, the future.
Bush was not up to the task. It's time for a change.

13. he wants you to have a beer with him so he'll have a ride home |
|
when he gets all sloppy and wasted and makes an ass out of himself hitting on every girl in the bar. then he'll expect you to pile him into the car and dump him out in his front yard. that's after he's turned into a no-count crying drunk all the way home, asking why everybody hates him. (because you're a shithead, george. that's why.)
that's the only reason george w. bush would ever want to have a beer with common folk like us.
