Q. President Bush is the first president to fund stem cell research?
A. That's right. And especially embryonic stem cell research. It's so new, for one thing. The other side is saying there is a ban, which there is not. What the president did, with federal funding, is fund a number of lines of stem cells that had already been developed. So in other words, they weren't embryos that the federal government, you know, killed to make into lines. The NIH actually funded both adult and embryonic research. They are both very preliminary, especially embryonic stem cell research.
Q. You and the president seem to enjoy the outdoors, so would you call him an environmentalist?
A. Yes, absolutely. You should see our house at the ranch. We have a 44,000-gallon cistern, we save rainwater. The rainwater falls into a trough and runs to a cistern to irrigate. We have geothermal heating and air-conditioning. We have reseeded with native prairie grasses, and now I'm cultivating 40 acres of native prairie. He does care a lot about the environment. He actually has a very good environmental record. He's a lot more outdoorsy than I am, or maybe I should say a lot more coordinated (laughing). I ride some, not very much, but I hike every summer in the national parks with a group of women I grew up with in Midland.
Q. If you could be sitting in front of an undecided voter right now, what would you say to them to get them to vote for George Bush?
A. Well, I have the opportunity to say things about him from a different vantage point than anybody else. Having been married to him, having loved him for 27 years, I can say what a really, really good heart he has. He's very disciplined. He has a lot of resolve. He's tough, but he has a very soft side that I see. And he's also very funny. He has a great sense of humor.
