Bush On Homosexuality And Same Sex Marriage
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=193746&page=1

<snip>

"I view the definition of marriage difference from legal arrangements that enable people to have rights. And I strongly believe that marriage ought to be defined as between, a union between a man and a woman," Bush said. "Now, having said that, states ought to be able to have the right to pass … laws that enable people to you know, be able to have rights, like others."

<snip>

*******************************************

Bush just screwed that one up bigtime. The hardcore Christian rightwing HATE the idea of civil union laws just as much as gay marriage. They call it gay marriage in everything but name. Bush may have just lost a HUGE CHUNK of hardcore evangelicals by trying to play this both ways. (so to speak). :)

I agree with that assessment, plus what about gay/lesbian couples who own property together or have kids? They need some sort of legal protection.

Edited on Mon Oct-25-04 06:17 PM by dralston
last month.

In fact he said if states want to give rights to same-sex couples, that's "great".

on edit:

exact quote and link

"If states choose to do that, in other words, if they want to provide legal protections for gays, that's great. That's fine."

24. interesting article that demonstrates a point...
This article in a Sacramento free weekly publication demonstrates a flaw in the argument that same sex marriages violate the sanctity of marriage. The author in the story finds a guy on the street, who just got out of jail, who will marry her if she pays him $5. The state has no problem with it. I found the article amusing,informative, and well written.

25. Bush just claimed that equality is up to the states
Bush said. "Now, having said that, states ought to be able to have the right to pass … laws that enable people to you know, be able to have rights, like others."

So Bush believes that it is OK for the Federal Government to pass laws giving some people certain rights, and leave it up to the states to pass laws giving the rest of the people equal rights. Somebody explain to me how this is different than the pro-slavery view? We reword the Bill of Rights to only apply to white folks, and leave it up to the states to grant blacks, Hispanics, etc... those same rights. Why do I think that Bush would actually support that, as well as his "Base".

28. This won't hurt him.
The operative phrase is, "marriage ought to be defined as between, a union between a man and a woman." Knowing he supports a constitutional amendment to forbid any other definition of marriage, the Christian Right and fundamentalists know in their hearts that he's their man.

42. Bush stance belies losing hand
So far in the last two months of the campaign, WH and RNC comments have all been geared toward energizing and turning out the vote among his base. The center has been ignored.

This comment has to mean that they are realizing the base is not enough. This is clearly a desparate appeal to the center. Hopefully all in the center can see how phony it is and hopefully those to the right will be disappointed at the pandering. I guess Bush can always tell those on the right that the Lord told him that civil unions are OK.

43. I guess they are giving up on the religious black voters
The premise that Bush was going to gain a lot of black votes this time around was entirely predicated on the belief that many black pastors would encourage people to vote for Bush because of his position on gay marriage. I can't see the evangelicals going for this at all. Bush has just alienated his base.
