Widening cry against GOP election tactics
Front page, very long article, in Tuesday's San Francisco Chronicle, and note the slugline!

ANALYSIS: Widening cry against GOP election tactics
Marc Sandalow, Washington Bureau Chief

Washington -- Of all the arguments advanced by Gov. Gray Davis to fight the recall, none resonates more strongly with Democrats coast-to-coast than his assertion that Republicans are engaged in a systematic effort to steal elections.

The anger that began over former President Bill Clinton's impeachment -- and intensified after the contested 2000 presidential election -- has solidified into an unshakeable belief among the party's faithful that the other side has abandoned rules of fair play.

The charge, which is gaining favor among some scholars and nonpartisan observers, has become a staple of Democratic speeches, opinion pieces and conversations. Strategists expect, no matter what the recall outcome, it will become a potent rallying cry heading into the 2004 presidential campaign.

"People are furious over what is going on," said Molly Beth Malcolm, chairwoman of the Texas Democratic Party. "Republicans don't want a two-party system. This truly is an attitude of 'masters of the universe. We're in control and nobody can stop us. We'll do whatever we want, and we don't care what happens in the aftermath.' "

2. An excellent article.
It really highlights GOP stealth-&-wealth assault tactics for subverting the democratic process.

3. Good to see that other people feel the same way
moron president + sinking economy + escalating quagmire = regime change in US, unless they cheat! Even with them practically owning the press, they can't hide people being out of work, and they can't hide the horrifying death toll of this war. They also can't make bush stop saying apallingly stupid things!

8. So true.
Not too mention the reredistricting efforts in Texas and other repig states, extreme rightwing owned "voting" machine companies, etc. Wonder if this will make it anywhere else in the corporate media.

9. Gray Davis is one of the hardest fighting Democrats in major office
Anyone who has watched the career of Gray Davis knows that he will not go down without a hard fight. If the right wing attacks on the people of California do bring Gray down, there will be hell to pay for some Republicans going into 2004.

We need to win this to help stop the Republicans from trying to destroy democracy!

11. that last paragraph...
"If Democrats persist in offering up messages of protest and pessimism, rather than offering solutions to the issues people care about . . . they will continue to see things like the recall effort in California," Iverson said.

Offering solutions to what? The fact that republicans allowed energy companies to walk away from defrauding california? That republicans have trashed a massive US Budget Surplus? That republicans have led us into two invasions in three years? That republicans led us into a quagmire in Iraq? The list goes on and on... but how the hell can they get away with saying crap like this?

17. They can get away with it because they own the media....
...and the media tells the brainwashed Busheep that Iraq is "free" that the Taliban flew the planes into the WTC and that the economy is doing just great, cuz Our Beloved Fuhrer says so (never mind those 3.5 million lost jobs and every fucking corporation relocating to India).

Everything is just hunky dory here in the good ol USA (cue the stupid ass Lee Greenwood song)

13. link to "Republicans Behaving Badly" article
http://governing.com/articles/8assess.htm

excerpt:

Since this is a column assailing partisanship, I would very much like to strike a bipartisan note right at the beginning and tell an equal number of horror stories at Democratic and Republican expense. Unfortunately, I’m not able to do that. The reality is that most of the serious outrages lately have come from the GOP side of the aisle.

Unpleasant as it may be to make the point, in much of the country, at a moment of serious fiscal trouble, this is a year of Republicans behaving badly.

14. How long
does a poitical force have to be bad before someone says it is so? Our national discourse on culteral and political values has been destroyed by conservatism.

This needs to stay on Page 1. This is the first time that I have seen this in a major news outlet and it's the basis that we all should be fighting for.
