Kerry Leads Bush in Paper Endorsements

NEW YORK - The polls may be too close to call, but there's one area in which Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) seems to be pulling well ahead of President Bush (news - web sites): newspaper endorsements.


According to an ongoing tally by Editor & Publisher, a newspaper industry magazine, so far 125 newspapers have endorsed Kerry — including at least 35 that had endorsed Bush in 2000 — versus 96 for Bush. including at least 35 that had endorsed Bush in 2000

They're supposed to be watchdogs for the American people, yet they are endorsing the most dishonest, most incompetent president in any of our lifetimes? Sorry, but that's called failing to do the job that our founding father's expected the supposed free press to do.

Newspapers have no excuse. They live and breathe the "news". That there are 96 U.S. papers that have swallowed the lies and accepted the glaring incompetence is indeed scary. I suppose subscription pressures have something to do with it.

I doubt that there are more than 5 papers in all of Europe that would endorse the Scrub. Even the Financial Times of London endorses JK.

Today we add 16 names to our exclusive chart of editorial endorsements (see below), mainly smaller papers. President Bush picks up nine backers and Sen. John Kerry adds seven.

Kerry now leads Bush by 128 to 105 in total endorsements, and easily tops him in the circulation of the supporting papers by 16.9 million to 10.9 million.

Even the New Yorker magazine decided to jump into the fray this time around, making its first-ever political endorsement this week with a five-page editorial backing Kerry. Spokeswoman Perri Dorset said the magazine broke with tradition because the editors felt that "this is a very critical election and an important time in our country."
