Protesters line the streets
Bush's motorcade brings out critics, supporters alike, though message of presidential critics louder

About a half-mile away from where Bush was speaking was yet another faction of folks with convictions more in step with his -- mostly Republicans who welcomed the president with open arms and signs that invited him to stay ``Four More Years.''

Some had come on their own volition. Others were urged to do so in an invitation from Summit County Republican Party Chairman Alex R. Arshinkoff.

It read: ``Anti-Bush protesters will be out in full force to demonstrate against the President. Although we cannot guarantee that you will see the President or his motorcade, it is crucial that we show the rest of the nation that Summit County fully supports the President.''

Still, it was the anti-Bush protesters -- mostly Democrats who were visibly angry with the nation's boss -- whose message was the loudest. They had more than a few choice words for him.

A spirited Jeff Seemann, a representative from the Stark County Peace Coalition who announced plans to challenge U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula, R-Navarre, in the next election, delivered taunts such as ``It's the Bill of Rights, not Suggestions.''

Does this means that they allowed the pro-bush* crowd into the park across from where he* was speaking and forced the AFL-CIO rally to move to a different park, out of sight and 1/2 mile away???

(Maybe it all did not matter, we got to march to where the motorcade was coming through and did manage to get A LOT of attention.)

When Shrub came to Canton, we were in the same pen as the Bush supporters...I'd be willing to be that Alex Arshnikoff (or however you spell it) pulled a ton of strings to keep that from happening again....especially when he heard how we shouted down the Repubs that day.

They were among an invitation-only crowd who got to see the president from less than 20 feet away while he delivered his remarks in an outdoor area at Richfield. They got even more up close and personal as they all got to shake hands with him afterwards.

“We were there for everything,” Hitchcock said Monday night. “We stood in the rain for three hours with no umbrellas because no one was allowed to have any. We got completely soaked.”

But it was an experience that was worth it, “absolutely,” Hitchcock said. He noted that his wife’s aunt, who is affiliated with Local 18 of the Ohio Operating Engineers, provided the tickets.

Hitchcock said they got up early, drove to Richfield and had to go through several staging areas. Then they went through “a whole line of metal detectors” before arriving in the area where the president was to speak.

What the "audience" didn't see was the crowd of protestors on the four corners of downtown Richfield giving * our own personal welcome to Ohio. Bush saw and heard us; that is the significant thing.

Labor Day marks the traditional start of campaign season and electoral vote rich Ohio is an important state. This was the president's 11th visit to Ohio since he took office. Bush received 50 percent of the vote in the state in 2000, only 3.5 percentage points more than Democrat Al Gore.

Republicans are preparing for another close race. "We're going to have to work harder. We learned a lesson in 2000," said Dan Ronayne, a Bush campaign spokesman. Ohio, one of the most unionized states in the country, with about 18 percent of the work force belonging to a union, has lost 200,000 jobs since Bush took office.

"He knows that he needs to win over the workers to win," said a shivering Valerie Cramer, 17, of Edinberg. Her uncle is a construction worker.

Not everyone in Richfield gave Bush a warm welcome. About 400 Democratic and labor leaders criticized his economic policy at a nearby rally.

"Bush's answer to every problem is tax cuts for the rich and trade agreements that send jobs overseas," said U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio. His district includes Richfield in Summit County.
