Eminem's Video For Anti-Bush Song 'Mosh' Hits The Internet
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1493010/10252004/eminem.jhtml

Michael Moore, the "Fahrenheit 9/11" filmmaker who tried his hand at directing music videos with Rage Against the Machine, would certainly approve of Eminem's new clip, "Mosh," which has just hit the Internet.

A scathing indictment of President Bush and the war in Iraq (see "Em Changes Targets From Jacko To Bush On New Track 'Mosh' "), the animated video begins with the jarring image of a commercial airliner flying over a school and then exploding offscreen. The point of view then zooms into the school, where Eminem is reading a children's book to a class in a scene reminiscent of the minutes following the 9-11 attacks, when Bush was at a Florida elementary school reading to second graders. Eminem is holding his book upside down.

From there, "Mosh" moves to Eminem's apartment, where the walls are covered with articles critical of the Bush administration and its policies. Filled with anger, he puts on gloves and dons a hooded jacket. Clips of Em rapping the track are then interspersed with scenes of domestic problems facing the country, such as racial profiling (an animated Lloyd Banks is harassed by police) and poverty (an inner-city family receives an eviction notice as their TV set shows Bush promising tax cuts for the wealthy).

Ask them to play it on television. The comment button is at the end of the story.

way to take the county back is by voting. You think something incendiary is going to happen but it is just voting.

I just hope the 18 year olds and up who see it will have already registered, otherwise it is too late.

59. Not at all. There's some vulgarity, but nothing
that isn't warranted by the situation (BushCo's effect on America). I normally won't listen to anything by obscene, homophobic, misogynist Eminem, but in this case, the worthiness of the message trumps any reservations about the messenger.

20. OMFG.
I've always been a fan of Eminem, and always thought he really had a pulse on what's going on, and was a true culture leader, but this clip has put me over the edge.

OMFG.

Watch for this clip to be much talked about, and divide us further in the culture wars. Let Bush divide the nation futher and have his camp ridicule this statement. It'll feel good.

And I was wondering where the protest music of today was. It's here... our October Surprise.

I watched it three times, to get a feeling for it.
At the end, when he says "can you hear us?"
then has the children chatter . . . powerful.

I hope America soon hears our young people–
like never before. Will they / will we, argue?

21. Holy ____.
I am not a fan of Eminem, but that video is amazing. And incredibly powerful. I wish it had come out sooner, but I'm glad that it's out now. MTV HAS to play it.

One thing though, all of the people getting pissed off, putting their hoods on, saying "Fuck Bush," and marching to go vote.. until the end of the video I thought they were going to raise hell and start some serious riots. I wouldn't doubt this song starting a riot or a violent mosh pit at a concert when Eminem goes on tour. Damn.

26. Never cared for Eminem
But this is a powerful piece - it affected me, and this is normally not my type of music at all.

I too was worried at what looked like the people getting ready to storm a building or to riot - and I laughed out loud when they were going to vote. It is the power, and if enough people get out there and vote, it will be impossible for the crooks to steal this election.

Eminem, my head is at thy feet, and I am but dust.

as a spoiled brat poser. But. I was wrong. I watched the video last night. Thanks, Eminem. Strong stuff. And make no mistake. This kind of music/video has an impact. This is where the shifts take place -- in the popular culture. We're already politically aware. This reaches the people who may not be. This counts.

28. Here are the lyrics:
kids: I pledge alegence to the flag of the united states of america

eminem: People, hahaha, this is it, it feels so good to be back!

VERSE 1:

I Scrutinize every word, memorize every line
I spit it once, refuel, reenergize and rewind
I give sight to the blind, my insight through the mind
I exercise my right to express when I feel its time.
just in your mind, what you interpret it as
I say the “fight” you take it as ima whip someone’s ass
If you don’t understand don’t even bother to ask,
a father who has grown up with a father less passed who has blown up now to rap phenomena,
that has or at least shows no difficulty multi task, in juggling both perhaps master this craft slash entrepreneur who has held launch a phew more rap bags.
Who’s had a phew obstacles thrown his way through the last half
Of his creatifical maneuver moving past that
Mister kiss his ass crack, he’s a class act,
Rubber band man, yeah, he just snaps back

CHORUS:

Come along follow me as I lead through the darkness
As I provide just enough spark that we need, to proceed
Carry on, give me hope, give me strength, come with me, and I wont steer you wrong
Get your faith and your trust, as I guide us through the fog, to the light at the end of the tunnel we gon’ fight,
we gon’ charge, we gon’ stomp, we gon’ mosh through the smog, we gon’ march through the mosh, take us right through the doors… COMMON

VERSE 2:

All the people up top, on the side and the middle, from the ghetto, lets all form and swamp just a little
Just let it gradually build, from the front to the back,
All you can see is a sea of people, some white and some black
Don’t matter what color, all that matters is we gathered together,
To celebrate for the same cause, no matter the whether
If it rains, let it rain, YEAH the wetter the better
They ain’t gon’ stop us, they cant, were stronger now more then ever
They tell us no we say yeah, they tell us stop we say go,
Rebel with a rebel, yell “rais hell”, we gon’ let em? No
STOMP, PUSH, SHOVE, MUSH… FUCK BUSH, until they bring our troops home… COMMON

CHORUS:

just,
Come along follow me as I lead through the darkness
As I provide just enough spark that we need, to proceed
Carry on, give me hope, give me strength, come with me, and I wont steer you wrong
Get your faith and your trust, as I guide us through the fog, to the light at the end of the tunnel we gon’ fight,
we gon’ charge, we gon’ stomp we gon mosh through the smog, we gon march through the mosh, take us right through the doors… COMMON

VERSE 3:

Imagine it poorin’, its rainin’ down on us, moshpits outside the oval office
Someone’s tryin to tell us something, maybe this is god, just sayin we responsible
For this monster, this coward, that we have empowered, this is bin laden
Look at his head noddin’, how can we allow something like this without pumpin our fists
Now this is our, final hour,
Let me be the voice, in your strength and your choice, let me simplify the rhyme,
Just to implify the noise, tryin to amplify to times it, and multiply it by sixteen million people are equal at this high pitch
Maybe we can reach alqueda through my speech, let the president answer our high anarchy
Strap him with a AK-47 let HIM go fight his own war, let him impress daddy that way,
No more blood for oil, we got our own battles to fight on our own soil, no more psychological warfare to trick us to thinking that we ain’t loyal
If we don’t serve our own country, we’re patronizing our hero
Look in his eyes, its all lies, the stars and stripes, have been swiped, washed out and wiped,
And replaced with his own face, mosh now or die, if I can snipe tonight, you’ll know why, ‘cuz I told you to fight.

CHORUS:

Come along follow me as I leed through the darkness
As I provide just enough spark that we need, to proceed
Carry on, give me hope, give me strength, come with me, and I wont steer you wrong
Get your faith and your trust, as I guide us through the fog, to the light at the end of the tunnel we gon fight,
we gon charge, we gon stomp we gon mosh through the smog, we gon march through the mosh, take us right through the doors... common

Eminem: and as we proceed to mosh through this deasert storm, and these closing statements, if they should argue, let us beg to differ, as we set aside our differences, and assemble our own army to dissarm this weapon of mass distruction that we call our president for the present and mosh for the futer of our next generation, to speak and be heard, mr president, mr senitor

kids: hear us, hear us hahahah

I caught it by accident flipping from the Sox game last night and BLAM. Right in the face. I heard about the "Fuck Bush" line but didn't hear it in the MTV version. Even so, it's more powerful in tone and mood than in its lamely noncommittal "get out the vote" message.

50. Wow...
Don't normally like Eminem but some incredibly powerful imagery in this video...some stylistic influences include the Harlem protest scene in the Spike Lee movie "Malcolm X" and the end scene in which the crowd is standing mute and angry before what appears to be Bush seems a homage to Norman Rockwell's painting "The Right to Know." Maybe reading too much into this, but watch the video...I love how the energy of the "rioters" is finally shown to be put into voting...what a STATEMENT! I have WAY more respect for him now...amazing artist.

63. Black Hoodies and Camo pants
We may not be able to wear our John Kerry T-shirts or buttons in the polls, but I for one will be wearing by black hoody and camo pants on Nov 2nd. That video was incredible and they are playing it like mad on MTV. Kids are lovin' it. It was 15 (I think) on TRL today.

Kids are coming out in huge numbers to vote. And if the election is lost or stolen, he SHOULD expect the big mosh pit on Pennsylvania Ave.

Never underestimate a group of righteously angry young people with little left to lose and everything to gain.

65. I never liked Eminem
...but that video gave me the chills. Wow. I'm several years past the target demographic for MTV, but that really captured all the rage I've been feeling. (Yes, I am in fact an angry liberal -- gotta problem with that?)

70. I watched the video ...
... and I couldn't understand one word he was "singing".

I truly dislike rap. Every rap "song" sounds exactly like every other rap "song" every other rapper has ever bellowed out.

71. try this
Go further upthread where someone has posted the lyrics. Have them in one window, the video in the other.

The key to rap, though, isn't the specific words of the lyrics. Eminem's claim to fame, above all else, is his "flow", the way he brings rhymes and rhythms together. Just reading the lyrics, it's not poetry. But listening to the lyrics with the beat, it becomes something greater. Add in the visuals, and it rises to the level of art.

Just let the lyrics flow. Watch it a few times, let specific words and phrases jump out at you. I didn't get rap either, at first, but now I find it an amazing art form.

And, yes, Sturgeon's Law applies; 90% of everything is crap. But the 10% can be something special.

79. yup
By the Sugar Hill Gang. It was very early rap.

Rap is, more than any other form of music except, maybe, country and bluegrass, about place. It's about where you come from. Eminem was the first to rap about white trailer park existence, which is one reason he's so hugely popular.

There's a common language in the visuals and the lyrics that can be hard to get a grasp on. I liken it to Shakespeare, to be honest.

No, I'm not saying Eminem is the modern Shakespeare. But Shakespeare's plays can be brutal to read, until you get your mind wrapped around the language and style of it. I will tend to read a play I know very, very well, such as Henry V or The Tempest, before I'll read a new one, because I need to get my mind framed into his world.

Rap is the same way. It's their world that you're looking into to.

Again, just as when watching a Shakespeare play, don't try to understand every word; just let the feelings and emotions flow, and the words will come.

80. Maybe, to him, it is true
He's at least trying to understand it now. Maybe because I didn't just attack him?

Rap can be a hard art form to understand. I didn't get it until about a year ago, then everything clicked. I thought as he did, that it all sounded the same.

81. maybe...
It sounded like he was making a statement about rap in general, not about how it sounds to him. But cool, I hope he finds something he can get out of it. I am also a little worked up from all the totally off-point irrelevant attacks on eminem on this board today.

83. understood
I remember being critical of Sen. Byrd a while back. He was saying wonderful things for us against the Patriot Act, etc. I was pissed because only a month or two earlier he had been saying horrible things about atheists.

Everyone jumped on me, don't attack the messenger, etc. But now they're willing to jump on Eminem...

85. Huh?

the words are as clear as a Merle Haggard song.

It's the rhythm of the words -- the way he enjambs text lines over breaks in melodic lines -- that makes it hard for the un-rapped ear to follow. And that's exactly where the art of rapping lies. As a fan of the art, I will say Mr. Mathers is not the best in the world, but what he lacks in precision he makes up for in passion and guts.

Maybe it's good some grownups don't understand it -- makes it more meaningful to the kids. But as a 40 year old country and western freak, I like rap a lot and find it perfectly intelligble. And I think this song kicks.

86. That's like saying

The Queen Elizabeth 2 is a boat, isn't it?

This is one of the single most powerful uses of the music video idiom I've ever seen. Pure distilled agitprop, and the animation is strong and moving.
