Countries balk at aiding Iraq

The Bush administration’s effort to secure significant pledges of money to help rebuild Iraq is meeting stiff resistance from many foreign governments because of continued concerns over security and the predominant role played by the United States, according to diplomats and aid officials.

 THE CONCERNS, which were fueled by the Aug. 19 bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad and continuing doubts about the politics of the U.S. occupation, have dramatically lowered expectations for a donors conference scheduled for October. Some U.N. officials are asking whether the meeting in Madrid should be postponed until the United Nations can reinforce its team in Iraq and reach a more solid understanding with the Bush administration over the world body’s role in the battered country.
       The implications for U.S. taxpayers could prove significant. With postwar Iraqi revenue running lower than the administration anticipated and expenses running much higher, the administration is seeking significant help from outside. L. Paul Bremer, the coordinator of the U.S.-led occupation, said in an interview last week that “several tens of billions of dollars” will be needed in the coming year alone.

how would the funds be administered? Are they expected to hand over $$ to the Bushes and let the Bushes decide? Would you give the Bushes a red cent on the honor system? The rest of the world has seen how this administration handles money (by pocketing it), they aren't fools!

It is rapidly moving from a quagmire to an international disaster. The rest of the world will have to move to get rid of Bush and Cheney. When the PNAC'ers are imprisoned for war crimes and all their assets are seized, we can start to clean up the mess Anyone will be hard pressed to get them off the oil spigot. Why do you think we never protected the UN building in Baghdad? Bush doesn't want them there. Now that the whole infrastructure is tore up and depleted uranium scattered around who would want to be there.
Big question, why do all taxpayers have to pay for this fiasco? It should be on the heads of the PNAC/Neocon crowd who wanted to "Bring em On".

I am sure they have no problem with aiding Iraq, but we all know that this call for assistance from the Bush cabal has NOTHING to do with aiding Iraq, and EVERYTHING to do with aiding Bush's re-election chances.

If a Dem wins the election, I bet all these nations will be falling over themselves to offer assitance.

In other words, I believe that this is a strategic decision by nations such as Germany and France to ruin Bush's re-election chances. They have decided that the only way to correct the problems now facing the globe is to get rid of Bush, Call it sanctions against the US - sanctions designed to encourage regime change.

Let's hope that Bush doesn't steal the election again and force even more drastic measures.
