Kerry offers country chance for change (Messenger-Inquirer endorsement)
Editorial

10/26/04

Messenger-Inquirer

Four years ago, we endorsed George W. Bush in his race for president against Al Gore, primarily because we believed Bush when he said he would be a uniter, not a divider.

We bought into the idea of compassionate conservatism.

Unlike the president, however, we can admit when we are wrong. And were we ever wrong.

Bush hasn't been able to bring Democrats and Republicans -- or the entire country, for that matter -- together working toward united goals. He hasn't tried, really. His "my way is the only way" approach has alienated people at home and abroad. He hasn't even accomplished much with a Congress that, for most of his term, has been controlled by Republicans.

This from a conservative paper in a republican region of a red state!

1. The Article Goes on to Endorse John Kerry
Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 06:02 AM by Labor_Ready
I just realized that I neglected to post that important point!

"And an issue that may not seem too important now, but is critical in a democratic society, is openness in government. We need a president who is open with the American public, who respects the rights of the citizenry, who accepts and shares information, even if it's contrary to his agenda, and who believes people have a right to know how decisions are made and who is crafting important public policy.

We don't have that now, but we're certain Kerry would do better.

Many who don't really feel conformable with Bush, but plan to vote for him, say they will do so because now is not the time to make a change in the White House. We would just ask them this question: Would you be happy if the next four years went the same as the last four have?

John Kerry is the only candidate who offers the chance for change."
