Jerry Lohfink, director of the National Finance Center, earlier this month informed the union representing the workers of the decision, according to a letter from Lohfink to the union. The move marks a significant erosion of the approximately 1,500 jobs at the National Finance Center, which is one of eastern New Orleans' largest employers.
Although the center is operated by the Department of Agriculture, employees do administrative support work under contract to numerous federal agencies.
The employees slated to lose their jobs work for the center's Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board Division, which administers the federal Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement fund for about 3.2 million federal employees. About 400 National Finance Center employees work on the Thrift Savings Plan account, answering phone calls from plan participants, processing loans, sending out statements and maintaining information systems. In the past, the National Finance Center's contract with the plan has been worth about $56 million annually.
