GOP Lawmakers Oppose Removing Segregation-Era Words From 1956 Law
<snip>

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Five Republican House members said Tuesday they want to keep segregation-era language in Alabama's constitution that declares there is no right to an education at public expense. They said it has protected the state from court-ordered tax hikes for schools. One said it was part of the fight against Communism.

The five Republicans oppose Amendment 2 on the Nov. 2 ballot, adding more GOP names to the battle against a measure Republican Gov. Bob Riley says is needed to improve Alabama's image.

The GOP opposition raised echoes of Amendment 1 in 2003, when Riley pushed for a $1.2 billion tax plan for schools, only to be defeated soundly, with many GOP leaders actively opposing him.

Alabama Republican Party Chairman Marty Connors said Tuesday that the party has not taken an official position on Amendment 2. But he said some Republicans are concerned about the language in the proposal, which would remove lines added in 1956 declaring no right to an education at public expense.

2. "fight against communism" Good grief.
Public education is communism? These folks need to spend a few years in a Gulag to realize how good they have it.

3. They still believe we are fighting the commies!
You can see how lack of funding has helped keep Alabama's public school system in the Dark Ages...just look at their state reps!

5. Why live there?
Why would anyone live in Alabama if they could leave?

Honestly. As a person born in the south, there is no way I would ever live there ever again.

What a cesspool of stupidity.

8. i've always felt sorta guilty for leaving, because our voices
are needed there, ya know? that's one reason the south is still so backwards in a lotta ways. the progressive voices like us get old enough and get the hell outta dodge.

16. I left California for NC 15 years ago
And I won't go back. I love the South. I'm glad to be here working for Kerry in North Carolina and I think we can win it.

Dixie isn't just pickup trucks, Moon Pies, and RC Cola...though I love all three. There are lots of great souls here on either side of the political fence. The problem is that evil political operatives (like the aforementioned wingnuts) have coerced them into working for the dark side. It's up to us to rescue those we can.

10. I sympathize with my Southern brothers and sisters
it's idiots like this that reinforce the stereotypes we immediately reference when talking about the South. These assholes are shitstains on the pages of history....civilization has passed them by, but they just can't seem to let go. Pathetic.

11. Alabama is a beautiful, fertile state.
Lack of education, fundamentalism, no liberal media voices, voter itntmidation, and corrupt politicians are the problem. Most of the residents are good hearted people, woefully (a few willfully) ill informed. Attack and ridicule is not the way to win in Alabama (or other Southern States).

12. C'mon people - if you think your state is a lot better . . .
. . . you're fooling yourself.

Here in Colorado, we used to be somewhat progressive. Dem Governors with Pug legislatures - but things seemed to move in the right direction for a long time.

Now it's gotten so bad, even the Pugs can't stand each other. I'd bet anything there are at least 5 reps who would echo those Alabama reps' sentiments in a heartbeat.

Don't think it can't happen to you.

13. I agree 100%
I moved to California 6 years ago to find a little liberal oasis in N. California...now, I have a mouth-breathing GOP wax figure as my governor.

I don't blame the good people of Alabama...I blame the cretins who keep voting for these unreconstructed racist bastards

14. Arizona was recently ranked #48 in how educated its
students were.

Or something like that. Hubby read the article to me while I was cooking dinner. At any rate, Arizonans don't have a whole lot to be proud of either.
