Company C, 4th Tank Battalion, 4th Marine Division, headquartered at Gowen Field, was notified on Oct. 25 by the Department of Defense that its members will soon be activated for Operation Iraqi Freedom. The company had been alerted two weeks ago that this could happen.
Although no official date has yet been announced, the company expects this call-up of U.S. Marine Reservists to happen in January, 2005. The call-up will last a total of about 12 months, which will include training in the United States before the Marines deploy to Iraq.
Not all the Marine Reservists of Company C will be called up for the same tasks. However, all will be assigned to the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, which will have operational control of Marines assigned to Operation Iraqi Freedom beginning early next year.
About half the company will serve as tankers operating the M1A1 Abrams tank, the company’s designated mission. Once mobilized, they will be split into two groups. The first group of about 20 Marines will be assigned to the 1st Tank Battalion, out of Twenty-Nine Palms, CA. The second group of about 30 will go to the 2nd Tank Battalion, from Camp Lejeune, NC. Training for the tasks assigned during this deployment will take place at those Marine bases and should last 30 to 60 days.
