NBC: Intelligence analysts cite ‘low’ concern

The CIA is working to authenticate a videotape in which a man claiming to be an al-Qaida terrorist warns of devastating new attacks on the United States, federal officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

The existence of the tape was first reported Wednesday afternoon by Internet columnist Matt Drudge, who said it was obtained last weekend in Pakistan by ABC News. Drudge quoted an unidentified “senior ABC News source” as saying the network was “working 24 hours a day trying to authenticate” it.

U.S. officials told NBC News that the tape included now-standard militant Islamist rhetoric promising widespread destruction inside the United States. The man cannot be identified, the officials said, because his face is covered by a headdress.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said ABC gave the CIA a complete copy of the tape Monday. They described analysts’ concern as “low” because it is not clear that the tape was recorded recently and because the man on the tape, who speaks in what appears to be an American accent, mentions no details.

“It’s unclear what this tape is — even whether the person on the tape is an American,” one of the officials said.

11. What troubles me is that: combined with the missing Iraq weapons and

the Vreeland story of an imminent attack AND the possibility or liklihood or threat of an October Surprise (which is a staple of the Rove/BFEE/Nazi bag of political tricks) I think you MUST take this story seriously.

Dozens of people on this board have discussed our fears regarding an attack or October surprise "electoral bomb" (which is what Goebbel's called the Riechstag fire which permitted Hitler to get "elected" Dictator for life).

For that reason alone any report must be evaluated and analyzed: whatever the source.

Sure the common electorate may fall for it hook line and sinker. But that is why we need to CALL it a possible October Surprise. A POSSIBLE fraud while, at the same time, we look at it carefully.

Drudge IS a media phenom with many sources of value (and many worth total sh*t). I appreciate his methodology even where I totally disagree with many of his views.

But the prolifeeration of Drudge citations and threads points out his role which we need to take seriously whether we can stand him or not.

14. I disagree to SOME extent but I agree with the fact we need to debunk

this tactic and realize it is a bag of tricks that shows desperation on Bush's part. Here's where I disagree, to analyze this by the very people who spin and embellish the truth is not my idea of validating the source. Why not let democrats evaluate it, because then you know the wouldn't hold back a REAL threat and they would EXPOSE a fake threat. If democrats cannot validate this will all the information they need, then it is a fake.
