5. IMHO, there are no coincidences
There is a reason for everything. This irony just totally blows my mind! This week Boston, next week, Kerry.

So, happy Holloween to you. If you would like one, here is the site.

10. I hadn't thought of that!
I was thinking how ironic it would have been had Texas beat the Cards and it was Bush country vs. Kerry country...completely forgetting that our stadium is "Busch" stadium!

Boosh threw out the first pitch of the season for the "Dead Bird" Cardinals. LOL

9. I despise Boston, New York, Baltimore..
...and all the other east coast baseball teams, but if Kerry wins the election, I'll be a little easier on the Red Sox. :)

13. I'm not a baseball fan, but I think it's exciting that the Red Sox won,

don't understand why there's been little talk of it here. Is everyone just too obsessed with the election to enjoy it?

I always like it when an underdog comes from behind to win. ;-)

14. cosmic.
What a weird night... watching the Sox win while stepping out every few minutes to watch the lunar eclipse. A moment of cosmic significance!

I'm so glad the Sox won-- not for me, but for the sake of my grandmother, who was in high school in 1918 when the Red Sox won their last World Series. She went to college in Boston and is a lifelong Red Sox fan, and as her eyesight and hearing began to fade, she would sit two feet from the TV with the volume turned up loud and watch them play. She turned 100 this year, and now I can call her and tell her the long wait for the championship is over! :)

I'm a Yankees fan...no flames, people).

21. You won't get any from this diehard BOSOX fan
As a Sox fan who has watched beloved relatives go to the great beyond waiting for a win, I can't "hate" Yankee fans. I can hate the YANKEES, but not the Yankee fans. I think that is what makes the rivalry so great--the fans on both sides are able to distinguish between the team and the supporters. I admire the way both teams can put asses in the seats, and I admire the loyalty of the supporters on both sides. Also, I have to say, I have never had more than a "joshing" conversation with any Yankee fan about the rivalry, and, especially when meeting them outside the NY-NE area (in the south, west or overseas) it actually provides a touchstone to our special culture and has resulted in some cases in close friendships. So, in my book, Yankee fans are just swell. When you meet a Yankee fan in Hong Kong or Zurich, you feel close to home. It's all good.

For those who are irritated by the money aspect of it all, that's baseball. The older, more established teams will naturally have a bigger fan base (they don't call it RED SOX NATION for nothing--so many New Englanders go, like all of us poor bastards, where the JOBS are, but take our loyalty with us) and draw more interest, from media outlets, advertisers, etc. I would like to get back to the days where the farm system is more of a force, but it is slowly coming around to that. The Yankees performance in the ALCS shows that you just can't throw money at a bunch of talent and assure a victory. You have to have that "team" thing going. The Yankees lost that this past year, and sorry to say, A-Rod had a LOT to do with it. It wasn't the way he behaved during the season (he was actually pretty modest and gave up his regular position) it was the outrageous sum, the fact that he was originally supposed to go to Boston (thank you LORD, for not letting that happen) and that chickenshit bitchslap with his Mickey Mouse White Gloves at first base. Also, I get the sense that the Yankees have less patience than the BOSOX with a struggling player--you either play, or you are shit. I get the sense that any nonperformer will be brought to the dungeon and horsewhipped--the players have that look of fear on their face.

The Sox in the past may have been TOO understanding when a player isn't cutting it, so long as it is a result of illness or injury and not boozing it up or being lazy. But what they do have, this year anyway, is that absolute TEAM focus. I do think it is a metaphor for our Party this year. As the real 'big tent' party, we have been well known for disagreements and metaphorical (actual!) fistfights over policy and direction, but this year we are putting all that aside for the greater goal of sending the weecowboy home. It is a feeling to be CHERISHED.

More importantly, it's a feeling we have to take to the polls!!

18. I'm a Red Sox fan who ...
... found the Series to be anti-climactic!

Maybe I was too emotionally wiped out after the Red Sox/Yankees games, but I thought that the Cardinals were exceptionally hapless, and had absolutely no doubt that the Sox would win.

23. I thought that they had some great individual performances
Jesus, that Renteria was something--he has some heart. But they didn't gel as a team, and they did not seem to want it as badly as we did. They also didn't have big bats in the series. But they did win the National League, so they aren't chumps. They just came in second this time. The fact that John Henry grew up as a Cards fan was a rather interesting backstory. Talk about conflicting emotions--your childhood vs. your adult sports enthusiast self!

Funny story--last night, a relative of mine called another relative after the last out to shriek and holler about the victory....and misdialed the number. Do you think it mattered? They ended up having a twenty minute conversation on the joy of victory....now THAT is Red Sox nation!!!

25. This will be known as the year the Sox won the series AND beat the Yankees
It'll be a piece of trivia to remember that St. Louis was the NL champ.

24. We love the way the man pitches
We love his heart, the fact that he supports Lou Gherig's Disease research, and we even don't mind all of the over-the-top, very non-New England evangelical stuff. The fact that the guy had his damn tendon stapled to the bone to pitch, bleeding and in great pain, gives him the right to say a stupid thing or two. It ain't gonna make MA go for weecowboy!

That IS a really stupid thing for him to say, but we'll be tolerant...the good Lord gave that man incredible athletic skill, and there obviously wasn't enough left over to give him any politcal judgment. We'll cheer his performance, and ignore, completely, his politics!
