BRUSSELS, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Poland acknowledged on Tuesday that public support for its deployment of troops in postwar Iraq was sagging because of the unrelenting violence and said it would back a direct role for NATO in stabilising the country. snip

An opinion poll carried out in August, after Poland had deployed its 1,700-strong contingent, showed 60 percent of Poles against the deployment compared with 55 percent in July.

More than 60 percent said they were afraid that Poland could become the target of terrorist attacks as a result of its involvement. An earlier survey had found that 90 percent feared casualties in Iraq and 58 percent wanted a pullout if they come. snip

"And...the popular slogan for the soldiers is: 'Don't be stupid, don't let yourself be killed'."

4. I have these visions on what the public perception…
might be domestically, if we weren’t shackled with a state run press.

5. we have a free press..
The propaganda would actually be much less effective if we had state controled North Korean style press. Do we have a press independent of state power is the real question.

7. It's not a state-run press,
it's a corporate-run press. But then, it's a corporate-run state. So what's the diff?

6. At least the Poles
didn't obfuscate about why they'd signed on to the Bush project:

"We have never hidden our desire for Polish oil companies to finally have access to sources of commodities," Cimoszewicz told the Polish PAP news agency.

Access to the oilfields "is our ultimate objective," he added.

Gotta admire that in a crony.
