Second Chance Body Armor lays off 56 workers

CENTRAL LAKE, Mich. - Second Chance Body Armor Inc. has laid off more than 20 percent of the employees at its main factory after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection because of lawsuits alleging unsafe products.

The company laid off 56 of its 250-member work force in Central Lake late last week, spokesman Gregg Smith told the Traverse City Record-Eagle for a story Thursday.

The layoffs involved office staff and production workers, he said.

Smith said no further layoffs are planned, but noted the company must file with U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the next few months a restructuring plan that could affect operations.

The company has been sued in at least 10 states, accused of selling defective bullet-resistant vests to police officers, which Second Chance denies.
